Default From Dodge to FORD!

Hey all... From MA and a new (or new to Ford) Ford owner... Had a 99 Dakota prior and now driving an 05 F150 lariat... Have to say, I am really diggin the 150. Truck drives like a Caddy compaired to the Dakota Also have an 01 Honda RC51 (crotch rocket), 88 Pontiac Fiero and the wife drives an 05 Jeep GC... When Im not working/eating/sleeping I enjoy R/C car racing

Looking to do some mods to it in the near future. Interested in some 22's and was wondering if any of you fellow 05 owners have had any experiance installing this size rim?

Also planning on exhaust (any sugestions? would like mello as opposed to abnoxious), Chrome grill, possible a 2/3" drop and maybe an intake/filter kit if its worth it...

Recently installed a Century hard tonneau cover that looks very nice (has power lock and dome light)...

Also installed an AVS hood protector. But removed it because the POS whistled on the highway (drove me nuts)... Any of you folks install a hood protector that didn't whistle? What brand?

Whell, there ya have it in a nut-shell...

Peace,
-AL-

Welcome to the site and congrats on the switch. I haven't heard of too man guys running 22's, but there are a couple. I prefer the 18's myself because I like more sidewall.

Hey ALJR,

How you doin man? Welcome to the board! Sounds like you got yourself a nice ride there. On the note of putting 22's on your ride, I have personally had this done (check out my gallery). I have the "Pirelli Scoripion Zero Asimmetrico" tires (man that's a mouth full!) & I need to check, but I believe those are 275/45/22's on "American Racing Assault" 22x9.5 wheels & I am very pleased w/the results and how they look & ride, even tho w/the size of these trucks, 22's still look kinda small on them!

While I plan to haul & pull some things, I have no intention of doing any off-roading w/these expensive as hell rims, so just make sure you know what you plan on using your truck for before you make such a large investment. People may question why you would put 22's on a 4x4 pickup truck, but it is your ride, and if it makes you happy than that's the perfect reason to do it. Down the road on my next set (hopefully way, way down the road!), I'll prob go w/a larger tire 35"+ and a smaller rim (in the teens) for a more "aggresive" look, but right now I'm completely happy w/keeping my baby on the smooth pavement and ridin on those 22's!

As for an AIC, I have the K&N 63 Series "Performance Intake" and I like it just fine. While I'm sure it does produce some performance gains, just having the million mile warranty on it was reason enough for me to get it. Everyone kinda has their favorites, so it's gonna be really hard to get a single best answer. Just do a search, and wait for others to post in here to help you w/your decision. The people on this board are only gonna suggest top notch brands, so as long as you choose one of those, the brand, in my opinion doesn't really matter (Just make sure that it is made for your 3V 5.4liter V8 engine of course).

For your exhaust, I personally got the flowmaster 50 series. While some peeps may dog it, others say they love it, I personally have had no probs w/it and would recommend it as a good quality product (BUT, if I had to do it again tho, I would get a magnaflow set just b/c the amount of negative comments that I've read is much less than compared to the flowmaster, but then again that could just be people throwing a tantrum?? Who knows...). My Flowmaster does have a really nice rumble upon ignition as well as upon accleration or during your city driving. It has a minimal rumble in the cab but I'm beginning to think it is quite audible outside of it by the looks and stares, (and little kids covering their ears OOPS) when driving down my neighborhood streets. This seemed to be the case even moreso once the exhaust had "settled" in on the vehicle after approx. 400miles or so. If it doesn't seem to be loud upon initial installation, don't worry, cuz I'm now beginning to see that it is really starting to produce a deeper level of "rumbleness" than I initially observed. I personally like it. It was nice at first, a little less than I expected and I was mildly disappointed, but it is now exactly where I want it. It is NOT at all a droaning, obnoxious noise, but more like a nice motorcyle exhaust rumble, w/out the concurrent high volume, if I can compare it to that w/out getting crucified. Once I reach crusing speed on the highway, tho, nothing is audible at all w/my windows down and stereo off, so it does not get on my nerves during any type of extended drive. As a last note, they should have sound clips on youtube of different exhausts hooked up to our f150's to give you an idea of what it may sound like.

Sorry for the novel of info, but hope this helps, and good luck hunting!

Thumbs up

Man, I've got too much time on my hands...

Sorry, here is some info on grilles. I personally prefer the horizontal running bars and the FX-2 series grilles look good on pretty much any F150 (don't know why they don't put them on all of them to begin with??)

You can get them on ebay; see link below.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-2...ayphotohosting

You can also purchase it directly from this Ford parts dealer as well which gets rave reviews from all I know who have purchased from them:
This can be found direct from here: http://www.tascafordparts.com//index.do
Part Number for FX2 F150 OEM Grille is: 7L3Z8200CPTM

Roush Performance makes some nice grilles as well and you can check a couple of them out here.
http://store.roushperformance.com/se...&frominterim=1

These types are just my cup of tea and you can really find any grille under the sun to fit your taste. I don't have it yet, but I will prob be ordering the FX2 once I get my money right. Just a note on the FX2, but it comes unpainted w/the "surround" piece as well, and it is really popular to get that and paint the surround as a paint to match w/the rest of the vehicle and do the grille itself all black. Of course, this is just one of many options.

Thanks for the warm greeting guys and thanks for ALL the info Dre...

I hear what your saying about the tires/rims. But to be honest with ya, my truck is going to be driven 99.9 percent on-road. Any off road that I do see, will most likely be a dirt road... Also, I am planning or changing back to the stock tires/rims for the winter... I just like the 22" for the bling-factor and for the handeling improvement..

I also like the style of that FX2 grill. Do you know if they make an all chrome grill? I recently purchased a Putco SS "spectrum" grill overlay. But it look like crap and the quality was VERY poor. The horizontal fins were not even at the ends and it just plane looks horrible. So I returned it and am shopping around for something else. Thinking a replacement grill is the way to go rather than the overlay...

I have been to youtube before and heard some exhausts... One that I really liked was the Borla. But they are pricy! My main concern is to keep the smooth-idel level down. I do not mind if it comes to life under acceleration, but normal driving, I would like it to be mellow... My motorcycle has race cans on it and after a while, my head starts to ring... Maybe im just getting old...

My AVS hood guard has openings on its lower rolled edge by the upper right/left corners of the grill where it meets with the headlight. I suspect that is what is causing the whisteling... Anyone know if another manufacturer has a design that does not have openings?

Last question for tonight. My truck makes a light knocking sound when its cold and ideling. It is faint but very audible and seems to be RPM related. It anly does it when the truck is started after sitting for a period. It goes away after about minutes or when its warmed up... My truck has the 5.4, 4x4 with about 17,500 miles on her... Any sugestions? I had the dealer have a listen and they said whatever it was would not be covered under warranty because I used an aftermarket oil filter!

Again, thanks for the welcome,
-AL-

Hey, if that's the case, then I personally see no reason why 22's would present any type of probs for you.

The FX2 grille to the best of my knowledge does not come as a chrome piece but the Roush grille does come as a chrome piece.

The only difference look wise between the FX2 and Roush is that the Roush has 13 horizontal fins and the FX2 has 12 (and of course one is chrome and the other is not).

If you wanna stick w/a Ford grille product that is made of chrome then the Harley Davidson grille is really sweet but only has 6 horizontal fins running across it. Going with this version, due to popluar demand and greedy Ford stealerships, you're looking at spending around $100+ more than you would an FX2 grille. Here's a pic of the HD grille:

As for your exhaust, if you like the Borla then simply go with Roush b/c Borla makes Roush yet the Borla's are just marked up b/c of that particular market segment that they're selling to (??? and the fact that I think alot of people don't know that Borla is making an equal product that is less expensive in its Roush form). From what I've read they are exactly the same. Roush makes a "legal" version as well as an off-road version. While getting the Roush over the Borla will save you sum cash, it is still pretty expensive in my opinion, but it is made of the t-304 stainless steel which I believe is the best quality you can buy. I have heard nothing but good reviews for the Roush exhaust as far as sounds quality is concerned and performance gains is suppossedly the best out there for our trucks. FYI, the "legal" version is said to have an agressive sound while the "offroad" version is said to have a very aggressive sound. This is the only difference in their advertisement literature. Here is a link for it below & this is the least expensive that I've found it. This is compared to the $571 price advertised on the Roush website.
