0-500km: 11.5L/100km (100% road - round trip to another city on a 55mph road) or 20.45MPG
500-1500km: 12.8L/100km (70% city 30% highway and roads) or 18.38MPG
I am very close to the EPA ratings (17city/23highway/20combined). Gotta admit that my foot is very light on the throttle, mainly for break-in period purpose. It might get worst soon
My buddy with the same setup, but a 2015 (6spd transmission) and 50 000kms does 17 on an average.

The truck computer is calculating 22.6 mpg versus my measured average of 21.664 mpg.
I am seeing about 1 more mpg on 93 compared to 87, which is not enough to offset the added cost. I may try 91 in the next few tanks. All this gas is from Sheetz.
I don't know what your father did after purchasing the truck, but if he drove it as far as you stated right off the bat, he screwed up. To properly break in the engine, it needs to be driven at varying speeds for the first 3,000 miles or so. This allows the rings and seals to properly set themselves and seal as they're supposed to. Driving at freeway speeds for an extended period on a new engine prevents this from taking place.
I have a 2011 SCREW FX4 with the 5.0 V8 and 3.73. Doing a proper break-in made a world of difference. As a result, my truck, with a light to moderate load in the bed (approximately 200 lbs) averages 21.3mpg at 65MPH. Of course, terrain has some effect on that, but this is the overall figure. A co-worker with the same truck in a 2012 version with the highly touted EB, only gets about 17-18mpg under similar conditions. Now, if I keep it at or below 62MPH, interestingly enough, my average jumps to just about 22.4, which is better than the max rating for the 2012-current EB engines. Most of the time, I monitor based on RPM, keeping it below 1900 while cruising. Oh, I do have a cab high fiberglass canopy on the truck.
I might also suggest the following:
1- Don't spend lots of money buying MobilOne, etc. The semi-synthetic used in Ford's Works package is just fine. I do the oil change every 5,000 miles. I can't buy the oil, filter and do the changes and other included checks myself for less than that. That said,
2- I do use Royal Purple Full Synthetic fluids for the transmission and differentials. Additionally,
3- I use ZMax additive for the engine and transmission. It's one of the few engine and transmission additives that really do work.
4- I run my tires (Pirelli Scorpions) at 5psi over the door sticker, or 40psi instead of 35. I'm not a hypermiler by any stretch, but this does help a bit. It also surprised the dealer, who when he reviewed it at my recent 50K service, advised I still had more than 20% left on my tires. The Pirellis aren't known for going much, if any, beyond 50K miles.
6- I wax the truck once a quarter. The rest of the time, I normally use the drive-through car wash machines (provided they are NOT the brush style) that have either cloth or spray wash dispensers. I've used a detailing team (no wax job) for wash and vacuum perhaps once or twice a year.
Advise him, if he isn't already doing it, don't be in a rush to get to speed. Light pressure on the pedal works better than getting up to cruise speed quickly. Then, every time the truck drops out of 6th gear (once there), you can expect to lose at least .5mpg.
Finally, if you have the instrument package, don't rely on the instant fuel economy gauge. Use the one for the overall trip odometer. It's more accurate.
Hope this helps. Let us know the outcome.
I think your advice is very helpful for me. Thanks for that.
2013 Super Crew 5.0 4x4 with 35" tires on it at 62k miles..... does an average of 11.8mpg mostly highway driven sound normal or should I be getting better?
A recent trip to NY from NC surprised me regarding the great gas mileage I got on my 16 Screw 2wd 2.7 ecoboost. I started out with 500 and change miles on the truck. I averaged 23.3 miles per gallon going to NY. On the way back I averaged 25.4 mpg. Most of my travelling was on interstate at 70 mph.
Now I don't usually trust mileage gauges so I kept gas and miles travelled records and the gauges were correct.
A reason for the better gas mileage on the return trip might have been because the truck may have been broken in so to speak.
Or heading south may have been going down hill more. Just joking.
About 2,000 miles on the E30 blend right now, here's some data for y'all:
1863 miles driven on E30, 11.3¢ per mile.
Of course, your mileage may vary, and this might not be available in your area. I consider myself lucky to have taken about 20% off my fuel bill, even if I think ethanol in gas is one of the dumbest things ever. Oh well, at least I'm getting some of my tax money back on this. effin' subsidies...
I accelerate nice and easy and never slam on the breaks unless it's an emergency. I try to keep it between 55 and 65 mph on the highway, but I have got 20.5 MPG going 70-75. I've also noticed slightly better MPG using ethanol free fuel. In the city I get roughly 17 MPG.
