That sucks.... Obviously the officer was trolling...... there is a common term in the law enforcement world call 5 minute 5 mile rule. Within 5 minutes or 5 miles I can guarentee that I can come up with a reason to pull you over. He was just looking for some reason in search of something further. To give an example here is the messed up part. By federal law a speedometer must be within 4 miles of accuracy. But yet you can be pulled over for 1 mile over the speed limit. This allows an officer to pull you over if he feels you are doing something wrong. go to court and fight the ticket. I am sure he will either not show up, or he will loose due to you not having the lights on while driving. good luck with the case!

Thanks this is some good info. So all you guys are saying that the lights have to be on for him to cite me? Because the lights were not on in fact I was stopped at a red light he drove through the intersection looked at me pulled a U turn and was waiting for the light to turn green to pull me over.

The lights do not have to be on to constitute an equipment violation. If they were on and the cop believed you were affecting other drivers vision he could have given you a moving violation. I believe some states require auxilary or off road lights be covered on roadways.

so the fact that my lights were off doesnt even matter?

What if the lights werent even wired to anything? That doesnt seem to make much sense to me.

Regardless he cited me for having too many lights, when really he should have cited me for the placement of the lights. Would this be enough to get me off the hook if he actually shows up to the hearing?

What are your smaller lights classified as? I know you can buy hella and piaa lights that are classified as fog lamps, if that's the case, you could show them that also.
