Grip about $ for mods
Well 954x4 it is cool to have mechanics are mechanically inclined peeps in the family. A huge plus and savings on labor! So it sounds like you have a plan and yes it is tempting to do everything now and not have enough cash left over to take a girl to Micky Ds. So dont rush into it and enjoy the build.
Yeah you could invest it and this and that but you are young. Plenty of time to be responsible so enjoy your youth!

Just a suggestion to you, if you do decide to dump a ton of money into it you might check into the insurance and see if they have coverage for aftermarket accessories. Just to cover you butt on some of the money
Luckily for me, my parents are very hands off about my money. I make it, they say I can spend it as I choose. Truck breaks, I fix it. If I want to mod it, and then it breaks, don't expect to be able to use their cars. Good system!
That being said, only mods are stereo, $20 driving lights, and new wheels and tires (but I needed tires bad anyways, wheels were 7.50 a piece.) I've got a leveling kit here already, but I sware someone up in the sky doesn't want it to go on. The day I started attempting it, found too many rusted bolts for hand tools, next day my pitman arm seal blew. Get the money built up again and now I need a $150 trans service. I just can't win! I've had this leveling kit in my garage since january!

After reading this, I also would check with the insurance company. I'm guessing the truck will be valued to the insurance company at around $4-5k. I'd see about an insurance policy rider that would cover at least the cost of the accessories.
It is your truck, and I consider what you are doing cool, but all it takes is one moron who is too drunk, stoned, or who is playing Angry Birds on their cellphone to hit into your vehicle, and your insurance company will end up handing you a check for $3000 in return for what remains of your truck, then calling it a day.
I saw this lesson when I was the OP's age. An acquaintance had souped up a vehicle with everything from nitrus, to expensive blowers, to a blueprinted engine. One geriatric ward case driving an old 70s station wagon with peeling woodgrain hit the vehicle head on in a parking lot, and only stopped because the police were nearby. The sports car was completely trashed. Insurance would settle for only $500, told the owner that he wasn't getting a cent more because mods are not covered.
