Living through CO winters all my life except 2.5yrs, and driving a truck all but 3yrs, never had a problem in the snow from my '80 F150 4.9L 4x4, '85 Ranger 2.8L 4x4, '99 Ranger 3.0L 4x4, '02 F150 5.4L FX4 nor my current '06 F150 5.4L 4x4. Typically and most the time, I nebver have to engage 4x4, only in the most extremely snow banks I must cross. Maybe sometimes the extreme mountain passes we have, but usually I engage it to be on the safe side. I only buy and use 4x4 for the most extreme conditions. Like most, tires play a huge factor, as does your driving skills. Should see the many sunny/warm state people that move here, buy a huge truck/SUV thinking that's all it takes, but end up in ditches or stuck because they simply do not know how to drive in the elements. Many people put sandbags or weight in their bed during the winter, but I have yet to do so and have never found a need to.

youre not going to make it through the same stuff youd be able to with a 4wd truck dude.. unless youre hitting it doing twenty-twenty five. which is really dumb (a stump could be hiding in there waiting to rip your axle out)

i usually mud in 2wd to play around then when i get stuck i lock it in four low. providing the whole isnt too deep.

Even worse, open differential 2WD...

Open diffs are lousy... my uncles 85 Bronco is lousy in the mud and snow because he doesn't have LS...
