I just watched a video. The 10r80 with the 5.0 is a real PITA. The 3.5 and 2.7 EBs are much easier. Just the sway bar, trans cooler lines. But the 5.0 you actually have the move the whole trans to get the cover to clear the exhaust. What a bad design for servicing!

someone in this thread said it’s easy. I have the 5.0 and it’s a PITA like u said. That’s why I’m letting a shop do it and not myself. In the future I will install one with a drain plug but sorta tight on money right now

Whoever said that must not have the 5.0 paired with the 10r80. I wouldn’t be doing that in my driveway either. Not a super simple pan drop.

IDK why ford wouldn’t just put a drain plug in the pan to save time for not only the buyer but also the dealer when doing drains

Lets you drain by choice just the fluid for more frequent fluid only changes (without filter etc. & especially if towing) & of course it makes it easier when doing a complete diy service !! Also note the motorcraft gasket is re-useable........just inspect it beforehand !!
Trying to service the trans on the ground would be almost undoable and very messy. You have to drop the pan and that requires some exhaust and cross member movement. Honestly, maybe you could struggle and do it on Jack stands but not on the ground. Newer trans pans are not metal, they are plastic, so no adding a drain plug. I added a PPE pan so I could drain it and it added 1.75 more capacity.

Just to compare ! I got my 13 done maybe Oct. last year @ Mr. Lube ....Don't remember actual price but it was around $220.00 Cdn. & what they did is vacuum the old fluid out (definitely no filter) but I was trying to check the trans level which I thought maybe low (it was) It fixed my slight issue so was needed....Have since retired that trk !! PS: the vacuum procedure is really what the quick lubes want to do as it is fast & they don't mess with gaskets warranty etc !! But I will admit it is a farce !!

I wanted to do this myself as well but after watching Ford Tech Makuloco's video on the process, I took it to the dealer to have a pump and fill done for $300 USD.

Just did mine today, out the door was $386 which isn't bad. i will say make sure to talk to the parts department to make sure they have the heat shields in stock because they break a lot when removed. after the change my trans feels brand new, highly recommend !
