Default Glitter From Front Diff

Ugh

2021 48000 2.7 Lariat.

Have been hearing a rubbing/grinding sound. Noticed it a day or so after I bought it.

Since it was used and no warranty I thought I would try to figure it out myself.

Changed wheel hubs but nope

Thought maybe IWE but sound never goes away in 2 wheel or 4 wheel.

I decided to change the diff fluid just to see what it looks like.

Lots of metal in the fluid so I think a rebuild of the front diff is in order.

Pretty sad since I just bought it and this is definitely a pre existing situation.

Saved old fluid just incase anyone would like to see it but yeah 😢

I will call the dealer in the AM and see if there is anything that can be done.

I thought it was 3year 36000?

Oh I see there is a 5year 60000 powertrain warranty as well.

Fingers crossed 🤞

yes and no

If the fluid has never been changed, I would say it’s normal for the age and mileage. Glitter will be produced with a set of gears breaking in.

As much of a pain, it is to remove the cover on these GEN 14 trucks, I highly doubt it’s ever been changed. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the fluid.

The noise would be my concern. Did you happen to check the fluid level before you drained?

I knew it would be dirty and have some flakes but it seems like a lot.

It has never been changed and the fluid level was where it needed to be when I pulled the plug it started to drip out.

The fluid was a really light grey color.

The grey color is less noticeable when there is a lot of fluid and more noticeable when the fluid is thin.

The noise is the main concern. It sounds like a rubbing/ grinding sound. It starts as soon as the vehicles starts to move.

I don’t want to be that guy saying there is a noise and then the dealer says it normal or they can’t hear it.

What I am hearing can’t possibly be normal.

well, I can see this over the years. I’ve never had a set of gears that makes a grind or a noise. Back to the glitter in the fluid, what you have is completely normal. The color is also pretty much normal. What do you look for diff fluid is slivers or chunks. Small tiny glitter specs is pretty much normal and to be expected.
