We could be looking at a multifunction tailgate and not realize it. As mentioned earlier in this thread, "multifunction tailgate" refers to the tailgate being able to open multiple ways. This originally started in 1966 with the "magic tailgate" on Ford Station wagons. You would not have to change anything "appearance wise" in order for the tailgate pictured to open sideways.

With the integrated spoiler sticking out a few inches back from the rest of the tailgate, I don't think it could swing open to the side on left-mounted hinges without some serious bodywork rub or binding happening.

Yes, but keep in mind the Honda Ridgeline "dual-action" tailgate also has an intergrated spoiler.

Ridgeline's spoiler is only in the middle, the ends of the tailgate taper so they are very close to the axis of the hinges. F-150's spoiler sticks out several inches away from where the hinges would be at the ends of the tailgate and would swing into the bed's corner above the taillight.

Cant see the Lightning getting a refresh this soon since it already has hideous different headlights and taillights, along with the vertical screen interior.

It's difficult to see, but it still has F-150 stamped onto the tailgate.
