Permatex RTV on rear differential

Got everything done with no drama. Removed the cover, cleaned up inside the differential to get as much of the old gear oil out as possible. Then used a wire wheel to clean up both the housing and cover surfaces. Sealed back up easily with the Permatex RTV. I tightened down until I got some "squish" out of the RTV. Then torqued down after an hour. Refilled 24 hours later with Valvoline full synthetic 75W-140 and 4 ounces of Motorcraft friction modifier. No leaks so far.

If you buy the correct permatex ... theres no need to wait.. and I'll clean the old gasket material off while cleaning the rest of the pumpkin out.. no big deal. beats $50 for a gasket each time.

If you were to wipe a coating of grease or assembly lube on that gasket (so it doesn't stick and tear) I don't see why it wouldn't be reusable, but $50 is a hard pill to swallow. I think I'd rather buy the Permatex and take the wife out on a cheap date.
