Permatex RTV on rear differential

I like Ultra Black. It's specifically designed for oil resistance. I hear good things about The Right Stuff too, but haven't tried it yet. The only "bad" thing I can say about Ultra Black is its highly adhesive to clean steel and subsequent removals and clean-up can be a pain. I'm told Right Stuff is not so unnecessarily adhesive.

I got in the habit of using RightStuff when I worked at the Land Rover dealership because those things have so many oil leaks, but it IS more expensive than most silicones. Ford has a super-tough gray silicone similar to HondaBond; either of which will also work on diff covers, but they're more expensive than RS.

It sure would be nice to have plugs in the bottom of the diff housing like axles did back in the 50's and 60's. I drilled and tapped my front for a 3/8 pipe plug. Still have to pry the rear cover off to change the oil though.

I mean in the bottom, so all the crud comes out. My step-dad has 2 CJ5's, a 56 and a 65. The 56 has drain plugs in the bottom of the axle housings. That's a nice cover, but to put it up front you'd have to drop the diff. The drill/ream-taper/tap was actually pretty easy. I did it to both 150's in my sig.
