Default Cam Phaser Issue

Heya all,

New F150 owner here to be exact an 05 model with the 5.4 Triton. Everything I read about this year is the cam phaser does this happen to everybody or is it just bad maintenence that causes this to happen. The truck has 124600 miles on it. Any insight would help thanks.

Congratulations on your new truck and welcome to the forum. You have acquired one of the most mis-understood engines there is, so be careful about what you read about it. There are plenty of strong opinions on both sides concerning the 5.4 Triton and mis-diagnosis of symptoms do not seem to be confined to the inexperienced. Keep the engine insides clean with proper oil changes, quality filters and occasional flush treatments or run something like Marvel Mystery Oil. If you do this you should not be destined to phaser problems, but be prepared to change or clean and reinstall the VCT solenoids as preventive maintenance. However - over the long haul, timing chains and valve train components are likely to give out earlier than rings or lower end bearings. Meanwhile, happy motoring. My 04 has over 200,000 on it.

Thank you F150Torqued so I take it that the noise i am hearing is normal and nothing to be conserned with as i didnt get any type of warranty with the new truck. This is my first full size ford and i am very pleased with it.

I've heard your video and I would say it is quiet a normal sounding 5.4 at idle. I would also say it is MUCH quieter than mine, and there are many on these forums who would be overly concerned and probably tell both of us we need a new engine. See https://www.f150forum.com/f12/camsha...-going-303650/ including my response.

Hello all again

Was talking to a work friend of mine and he said that it sounds like I have an exhaust leak. Judging from my video can someone tell??? I hate not knowing engine sounds.

Thanks in advance.

It would be difficult to make that determination from the video. But, you can fairly easily confirm/eliminate that possibility by using a three foot piece of 3/4" heater hose as a simple stethoscope and listen all around the exhaust manifolds and headers. Or if you have access to live scanner data, an exhaust leak will effect fuel trim and O2 sensor readings.
