we had a truck at work do this replaced all the plus and ran in damn near down to E then filled it with 93 octane... what it was... was water in the fuel.
My '97 with 195,000 on it spent much of its life pinging under most load conditions. Changed to non-ethanol premium at about 150,000, end of problem. Surprised I haven't broken a ring or something worse.
