So, the windshield washer pump on my 2016 failed this week, I was pretty surprised at the problem so early in its life but I guess they don't make things to last anymore.
I didn't want to take it to the dealer for what would have been a warranty repair since it was going to take about a week to get the appointment and then I have to drop the truck off and then go back later in the day to pick it up again....a big waste of time.
I was pretty sure it wasn't a very big job so I thought I would just do it myself and then make a post to help anyone else that might need to change theirs.
The first thing is to locate the pump, it's actually mounted to the side of the reservoir right near the bottom.
The best way to access the pump is to turn the wheels all the way to the right and then remove the screws that hold the passenger side front wheel liner in place and then pull it back in order to see and access the pump. You don't have to remove the whole liner, it's pretty flexible and will move far enough to access the pump.
Once you have access to the pump, you can remove the wire connector on the top of the pump, there is a little plastic clip that has to be slid up to unlock it...after getting the wire connector off of the pump I checked it with a test light to make sure that it was in fact the pump that had failed...in my case, it was definitely the pump that had failed.
The hose that goes out to the windshield just pops off and then you just pull the pump out. It takes a bit of force to get it out but there is nothing holding it in other than a tight fit. My reservoir was full, so once I pulled off the hose that goes to the windshield I let it drain out into a clean bucket so I could reuse the fluid.
The new pump just pushes into place, the hose slips back on and the wire clip will push on to the top, make sure the clip clicks locked or it could come back off easily. Then the screws for the liner need to be put back in place and you're done!
My local Ford dealer had one in stock, but they charged me dearly at $75 with tax....i live in Canada and can't get the part from Tasca that quickly....although they have the part for about $22 😳
Nice write up... ouch on the price. Those pumps are pretty generic and are $10 to $15 at any parts store. I changed one out in my 04 FX4 about 10 minutes before the new owner came to pick it up when I sold it. I like to be 100% honest when I sell a vehicle and I had told him everything on the truck worked.
Thanks for the info! I've been trying to find a fuse for this issue for my 2017 F150 for a couple months and have had no luck! I got on here today and seen I wasn't the only person with this issue. I pulled the pump out and went to the parts store and picked a new one up and pot it in and problem was solved!
It's a rather easy job, I prob had a half hour in it not counting my trip to the auto parts store. It would of been a heck of a lot easier if my hands were smaller.
Thanks again!
I entered the part # shown on the bag in your picture on the Eastgate Ford (Ontario) website; replacement part # comes up as JL3Z-17664-A, at $22.60.
For the 75 buck your dealer charged you the b**tards should have installed it too!
I didn't get an OEM pump from the dealer, I bought it at AutoZone for $35.. they had a cheaper one for $25 but I figured I would get the better one and do it once.
Just did mine 2 weeks ago on a '15, paid $49.17 at a dealer in Kingston, Ontario. I must have pushed the rubber line too far into the pump's outlet as I could hear the pump but wasn't getting any fluid on the windshield. Likely had the 90° of the rubber line blocking the outlet, I pulled it out slightly and it fixed it.
The other difficulty I had was a bit of a leak where the pump goes into the reservoir. My recommendation for anyone doing this fix in the future, get the grommet too, it's only a $5 part and it'll likely prevent leaks. I pulled slightly on the top of the pump to change the angle it went into the reservoir and it stopped the leak. Grommet is part #10 on this graphic.
