Default trailer brake controller

Hello all - long time lurker, new poster.

2015 2.7 SCREW 4x2

in about a month i'll have to drive to florida and bring back my inlaws boat - this being my first truck, i didn't give much thought to towing when i bought it, other than to see it had a receiver, but wondering if that was a mistake.

I definitely don't have the brake controller installed. i spent a few hours researching last night, and see mention of the connection not being active without the tow package, but i can't find anything definitive.

according to the window sticker i have

CLass IV trailer hitch
301a package

dooes have the 7 and 4 pin connectors on the back, and there's a towing connection wire in the glove box (i think for third party controllers)

according to this

http://www.ford.com/services/assets/...stalCode=54017

the 301a gets me the smart trailer tow connector (and i do see all sorts of trailer options in the menu).

and that i need either the Class IV receiver, or tow package for the trailer brake controller to work.

I'm going to call around ford tomorrow, but can anyone confirm what's needed? just the controller or is something else needed too? and if so, what else?

It's a 22ft pontoon boat - as far as i can tell, under 5klbs dry, so i should be fine (without weight distributing tongue).

Also, anyone in the Raleigh NC area recommend a dealship? I've used Crossroads of WF the few times i've needed dealer service, but i'm kinda in
the middle of nowhere, WF, so it's not a big deal to go to another

thanks

Zach

98% of boat trailers don't have electric brakes, usually surge over hydraulic, if even equipped. Just hook up and go, you'll be fine.

I just added an electric brake controller for a trailer that weights about half of what yours does. The OEM controller cost $140 and there are Youtube videos showing how to install it. The process is fairly simple but you do have to take out more of your dash than you might think. Once it's in you need to have the dealer enable it, or get the Forscan software to do it yourself. The dealer I bought from gave me a BS story about it being a 50 minute job because "a lot of parameters have to be changed". Another dealer did it for free in just a few minutes when I took it in for a minor recall.

Check the laws in your state. Here in FL, over 3k every wheel must have a brake. You have the wiring behind the lil coin holder. It will have to be activated via forscan or the dealer. As stated, boats dont have electric brakes, Ive never seen any.

The brake controller is only about $85 (was $75 a few months ago) at Tascaparts.com.

Did you actually buy one from them? The link you posted shows the cheap price, but says to call for availability and gives no option to buy it. When you search for the part it show the more expensive one, and it allows you to add it to your cart. My bet is you won't be able to actually buy the cheap one for whatever reason.

On 4/4/17 I bought it for $72. I helped someone on Reddit purchase the thing though it was $82 last week. Maybe they are out of stock or back ordered currently?

Thanks for all the responses. So basically, most likely not needed, but shouldn't have any wiring issues.

Does anyone have a pic of the tasca installed? Does it fit neatly in the same spot as or?
