I just bought a 2015 xlt that is fitted with king ranch 20 inch rims (no clue what year). It throws a “Tire Pressure Monitor Fault” as soon as the ignition key is inserted. I tried doing the retraining and it just times out.
So what do I do here? (Apart from take it to the dealer and get utterly screwed)
I saw some videos for a reset tool but it just appears like the tool does the same function as deflating the tire (albeit by cloaking the valves signal)
Suggestions? Options?
(I don’t have the original rims/sensors)
Yeah you might just have regular valve stems or dead/unresponsive TPMS sensors off the donor truck. You could buy a set on Amazon and get local tire shop to install. Then try to sync them again yourself... or just go to the dealer and get it over with. Unfortunately a lot of people will keep their sensors if they change wheels. FWIW a set of 4 on Amazon is about $50
If you go the Amazon route (which I did and with prefect results) Also buy the little activation tool that sells for less than $10. Then, before having the sensors installed, lay a sensor on top of each tire and follow the activation process using the activation tool. This way you know all 4 sensors are programmed properly to your truck. Don't worry about remembering the location of each sensor when you activated them. The truck will learn their location and read properly once installed and mounted on the truck.
The tool activation process is not done via letting air out of the tires, but with the tool and following the correct directions.
Is there any way to test if the existing valves have sensors?
Local tire shop will have a tool that can read if TPMS is installed. I bought a set of Roush take offs and was told they had TPMS. Couldn't get it to read so I took it to the shop and they didn't get any reading from any of the tires. No TPMS.
My solution was to put my tire pressure gauge in the center console, download forscan, hook it up and un check the TPMS check box. Problem solved.
