Default Tonneau cover AND utility rack for kayaks

We recently purchased a 2016 XLT Super Crew Sport model. We have thought hard about the type of tonneau cover we want/need and have narrowed it down to the BAKFlip MX4 or Revolver X2. So, the issue is, not only do we want/need to be able to transport stuff in the bed of the truck securely (hence the choice of tonneau), we also want to be able to carry some kayaks with us too. Does anyone have any recommendations for racking options for the kayaks that will also work with the tonneau cover engaged? Most rack options for the bed (would prefer to stay away from the roof unless I have to) seem to require bracketing which would interfere with the tonneau frame. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I'm very interested in this myself. I have a Revolver X2, and would like to see what types of utility racks or rail/cross beam type accessory racks that people are using for kayaks.

I wanted the same, SUP instead of kayak, but there is no perfect solution that I could find. Seemed that one of the few solutions was the Pace Edwards Tonneau with Explorer Rails and contractor racks. Expensive but seemed like it would work. I just didn't want a rack on all the time and did not seem that it was easy to remove. Maybe this would work for you.

I went with the Bakflip MX4, super happy with the cover, and picked up a Thule roof rack. I won't keep the roof rack on all the time, put it on when driving to the coast, when local I'll put the boards in the bed.

I like the Thule bed rack setup but you have to give up the tonneau.

Good luck in the search.
Tony

Tony, Thanks for the reply. What Thule system (components) did you end up with?

Rival, how do you like the revolver? My wife is concerned with list space when rolled up at the cab. Also concerned with so many clucking/moving parts.

If you want a true secure way to transport what ever, but also be able to have a headache rack then look into the diamondback covers. My father in law carries his 1400lb UTV on top of his 1 ton.

I know you didn't mention the cover, but it's another option. I think you can customize they how ever you want from the dealer, can probably get a rack for the back of it to carry kayaks parallel to the road.

I like it a lot... Best thing for me is that the roll is above the cab when rolled up, so you don't lose bed space. There is some debate about it getting in the way of dirt bike tires and stuff, but I don't have one and it hasn't gotten in the way for anything else yet. I like it too, when rolled up I don't even notice it when driving. The roll sits lower than the back headreats and the kids booster seat we have in the middle.

Not many moving parts, it works very smoothly. I haven't had it through a winter yet, that's my only concern, rolling it up when the vinyl is hard and everything is frozen. I can't imagine that I'll need to open it/haul anything big in the winter very often though.

Thule AeroBlade ARB60 Sku number : ARB60
Thule Rapid Traverse Foot Pack 480R Sku number : 480R
KIT1787 For 480 and 480R Foot Packs only Sku number : KIT1787

I haven't put it on yet but have used Thule for years and it should go on and off pretty easily.

I found this the other day, and it looks like it might work with the Bak covers. It says it fits most trucks with exposed stake pockets, and if you use their website to find racks for your truck, this model doesn't come up.

https://www.usrack.com/responsive/stake-pocket-rack.php

I might reach out to them and see, but I'm not in the market for one until spring.

Rival, I hate to burden, but how wide/high is the roll when rolled up? Is it easy to remove if you need full access both vertical and horizontal?
