One reason keep the receiver in the hitch at all times. So do friends. What hits in back has to go through that first.
Saved a couple vehicles from any damage

Never had any damage from leaving it in. Just pieced the one hitting the rear. Cars plastic now, against
a metal receiver

I've hit my shin on my receiver hitch a few times over the years when walking past my truck and not looking. For someone who doesn't cuss., it can cause a bad word to somehow show up.

Yes leaving the receiver hitch in can be problematic especially in parking places where it extends over into another parking space, selfish!

Also, may even be the cause of an accident, by sticking out further than the truck, a person may have needed just one or two more inches to stop but because of the hitch, they connected!

I picked up one of those D ring shackle receiver adapters for my truck which is on my truck full time secured with a locking hitch pin.
Sticks out much less than than a regular tow receiver.

On my Jeeps i use tow hook receiver adapters which do stick out a lot further than a shackle adapter also secured with locking hitch pins.

My Jeep got hit from the rear twice.
In one case absolutely no damage to my Jeep.
In the other case only a minor scratch on the rear bumper.

In both cases, the cars that hit my Jeep had extensive front end damage.
