Thank God for the Hitch!

Lol.. I remember my hitch folding a Chevy cavalier hood like an accordion.
Was at a light and the girl behind me thought the light turned green and hit her gas (despite the fact I wasn't moving).
Truck was fine and I didn't even use her insurance information, I did take it though in case soomething popped up. The only thing that popped up was her hood though. Her boyfriend came and even laughed, he had a Chevy 1500.
But agree, that hitch is the first line of defense in the back.

don't be surprised if there's some frame damage. the hitch may be strong, but the negative is it transfers all the impact force directly to the frame instead of the components on the truck built to absorb impact.

I had a similar rear end hit 2 months after I drove my '16 off the lot. No serious damage to the truck. Both chrome bumpers and the step pad were replaced. The hitch chain bracket had a very slight bend that was easily straightened and repainted. I was luckier; my tailgate escaped without a scratch. All in all about $550 damage. The minivan that hit me was totaled, hood and right fender folded up to the windshield by my hitch.
I wouldn't expect any frame damage to you truck, but a good shop should check it thoroughly.
Glad you weren't hurt!

Hoping that isn't the case, but will discuss this with the shop who does the work...thanks for the heads up!

Impacts to the hitch tend to cause more damage because it bends the frame. Especially if you have the receiver in the hitch. It acts like a lever and bends the frame pretty easily.

I can see how a 5mph hit could cause frame damage. Was in a parking lot accident where the other party was speeding through and hit the hitch on the rear of my truck. That was estimated he doing accelerating and was doing around 15 when he hit the hitch on my bumper (I was halfway out and instead of waiting he decided to be an *** and try and squeeze through). Anyway, he did get the corner of my bumper but the hitch was hit first and took the brunt. His little Honda had massive damage to the quarter panel, hood, and doors (both on that side. My damage ended up costing right at $700 including parts, labor, and paint. His I was told was around $6,000. The point is it all depends. At that speed in a dead on rear collision, my damage would have been much worse.
