I'm on my 3rd f150 since the step was introduced and for the 3rd time I picked a truck with the 502a and no step..

I've been contemplating picking up the random essentials till now.

I did know, obviously the top cap and the removable inner panel are different, but what else in particular is different than a gate without one?
I didn't think before, but now I'm probably imagining there must be bracing of some sort..??

Yep, bracing, mounting brackets and maybe some reinforcing.

Right. It's been asked and explained a few times over the past few years, and confirmed and reconfirmed. Swap tailgates is the only option.

I should've realized that before.

That's okay though. I've had this bumper step on all of them.

Or just keep a little two step ladder in the back for the times you need it. Tie it to one of the hooks when not in use.

I have the f**k I'm getting old, retractable Amp Bed step already..

I had the other brand (can't remember their name) before which was cheaper.
That one actually tapered at the back and disappeared better under the bumper.

So me wanting the more expensive by $30, Amp bed step wasn't better except maybe the step is only one piece, whereas the previous brand was 3 pieces.
Either has given me any trouble and I think it's the next best thing.

I have the same one. Best $ I’ve spent on a truck ever. Pops down and back up in 1/2 a second, and makes it very easy to hop into the bed.
