Default Tailgate Opening Itself

I know it has been discussed before is there a US recall for this yet? Happened again to me yesterday. About the 4th time. I wish there was a tailgate ajar warning light.

Model Year 2015 F150s had a tailgate ajar warning message that would appear on the IPC. It was very problematic and in Ford's ultimate wisdom, their fix was to just remove it and turn the system off in the IPC/BCM. There are several threads for adding one back in aftermarket but I can't say for sure whether a 2018 still has this ability. Nobody makes a kit for this and the people that have done it have all created their owns designs.

I thought there was a TSB for the US released sometime after the Canadian Recall.

Is it supposed to appear when the tailgate is fully open also? I have an early build 2015 and have never seen this message. Built on 11th day (10/30/2014), VIN ends in A01316.

Likely only for the trucks with the power tailgate.

No, it was to appear as soon as the tailgate moved away from the locked position. The switch was an integral part of the tailgate pivot on one side (not sure who it worked). I don't know if this was available with all trim levels. Some later models still had all the wires needed in the harness to add the feature back in.

Wish i had the tailgate ajar option. I forgot to shut mine after going to the store and drove about 15kms before a passerby waved me down to say it was open, thankfully nothing flew out.

Yes, I have contemplated adding this many times, just never "pulled the trigger".

I've opened my tailgate (by accident at first) using the keypad. On a Lariat or higher (with a solenoid actuated tailgate release), if you unlock the truck using the keypad and then immediately press the 5-6 button, the tailgate opens. Not in the manual. Just "magic." :-)

When I took my 17 in, the service advisor looked to see if my truck was eligible to have this fix done. I had no knowledge of the issue but he told me horror stories about people's tailgates opening when they were towing and the trailer would hit the tailgate and cause all sorts of issues. He says he checks every truck that comes in and "makes" the customer get the fix. Trying to keep from having issues in the future.
