Default SYNC APIM / USB Re-Location

On previous generation trucks, we were able to add an additional USB cable on the back of the SYNC APIM module and route that cable to the center console or glovebox for a hidden charging/media connection. I've been looking for info on the new generation and best I can tell the APIM is now located on the back of the head unit vice under the center channel speaker?

Can anyone confirm if we still have access to an "open" USB port on the rear of the APIM? If so, I'm curious if another OEM USB connection port similar to the one found in the front cubby could be installed within the console for a clean install.

I recall this thread from another forum reference the process that was taken in order to make this happen on the older trucks.

Cant be done, the secondary USB connector on the back of the APIM is non-functional from the manufacturer.

So then I would assume that if it comes that way from Ford, Forscan cannot help us activating the second port?

Appreciate your feedback. Thanks

Forscan cannot activate it. You can split the usb signal behind the oem plug in the center console cubby but the aftermarket usb plug will not have power supplied to it, just data. Aka, you will be able to use it as a usb port but it wont charge the device while you are using it.

Might want to keep searching. I am pretty sure there is a thread on here where it was found some of the units had a 2nd usb port and it could indeed be turned on.

EDIT: I think it was 2016boostedgreygoose who posted it.

Search is your friend, reading this one sure makes it look like it's possible.

Well look at that. Interesting info on a quick glance, I will review that and see what information can be found on proceeding.

Coming over from The Diesel Stop (2012 F250) & F150 Online (2006 & 2009 F150s). Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction, not to say I didn't search but clearly didn't stumble across that.

Thank you!

I saw this and read the whole thread the other night, good info in there. I am not keen on drilling any holes/grommets through the shifter console nor do I want to split off the USB from its original location. In reading that thread though it did remind me of the one I linked above which I did in my 2009 F150 and worked perfectly.

So began the search on the APIM on the new trucks and I guess the wording that I used wasn't producing the results I was looking for. Your mod is very clean and I like how the cable comes from the center console area, just no drilling on the exterior for me. The interior of the center console could be another option, but I wanted to come right off the APIM and tap that USB connection there vice where you hooked up. If none of that is an option, then I'll see what I can do with what I've got.

Your pictures are helpful and if I determine an option, I would most likely follow your routing path to the console from the center stack.

Thanks!
