Sync 3 Technical Discussion
#461
Totally different. Sync 3 is two motherboards. I refer to it as motherboards vs. motherboard/daughterboard bc the smaller board is the "computer," containing the CPU/GPU, DRAM, Hard Drive, and the larger one is essentially an independent control module/power supply that bridges the car and the computer. Sync 2 was one board containing both functions side by side, and was a totally different CPU/GPU architecture.

Upgrade worked
2016 XLT Sync3 upgraded fine using the method outlined by ACool. I was previously getting Mem_003 errors using file from Ford. By splitting the install into 2 packages, install had no issues and took total of about 25 minutes. To play it safe, I turned truck off for 5 minutes after each install. I had 2 USB drives to make it easier: 32 GB and 128 GB, both formatted to ExFAT.
After install completed, system showed version 3.0.
also, Waze works pretty good in AppLink mode. I really miss CarPlay but love Waze vs. Apple Maps. Waze has locked up a couple times but otherwise no problems.

Update Time.......
My dealer called yesterday and asked me to bring the truck to the dealership tonight after work. 45mile round trip.
The tech hooked up the WDS box and ran a diagnostic test.
At some point it registered a failure and produced a repair code.
The repair code is required before a new module can be ordered to supposedly fix the problem.
I think he said they were ordering a APIM module?????
This is what Ford Engineering told him would resolve the issue.
Anyway, now it is time to use ACOOL's method and see if I can get it to load V3.0.
I'll keep you posted.

So I have found my way here after realizing that Ford Support is a dumb as a post. After following online instructions and going through two thumb drives they have told me to bring my truck in to the dealer to have them install the update because they think that my 2 USB ports are bad.
I have read through the thread and I am confused as to what the latest fix is that works for the MEM error on a non-nav system. I am not computer savvy as some of you so not confident that I can pull this off. The last thing that I need to do is "brick" it and be in a bigger mess.
Ford should provide a product that works, I am still in a queue (for a year now) waiting for them to solve my power locks freezing up in cold weather. They have a temp fix while a permanent fix is designed. I paid for a working truck. It is on them to provide it; software and hardware.

Ok,
1)extract the NAV install to a USB
2) from one of your Non-Nav packages, find the file GB5T-14G386-SB and copy it to the usb SyncMyRide folder
3) modify the autoinstall.lst to say the following:
Then install the USB. If it completes, make sure you reboot the APIM (turn off car, open/close door, let sleep, turn on car)
Once rebooted, install 3.0 Non-Nav as you would normally

Code:
; Prep for installing full package without MEM_ERR03 [SYNCGen3.0_ALL] Item1 = GB5T-14G386-SB Open1 = SyncMyRide\GB5T-14G386-SB.tar.gz Item2 = JR3T-14G391-CD Open2 = SyncMyRide\JR3T-14G391-CD.tar.gz Options = AutoInstall,Delay
Once rebooted, install 3.0 Non-Nav as you would normally

The solution summed up: Install any version of Nav voice, then, install the OEM full update that you had issues with (which will overwrite nav voice with the correct non-nav voice).
Simple ......
