Default Upgrade to V3.0 from v2.3 questions

Lots of good info in this thread. I have a few questions that I would appreciate your input.
1. Has anyone had any luck with the WIFI update? I have not been able to get the "Check for updates" to find the update. Last time it completed was on 4/26 with "no updates found", and since then it just says, "was unable to complete, please try again later" type message. I do it again, and the icon just spins for 30 min or so, until the system times out and turns off to save battery. I do have auto update enabled, but so far it has not auto updated on it's own.
BTW (wifi signal strength in my garage is "good" three bars.)

2. Does it really take a 32G USB drive for the manual upgrade? The files are no where near 32G in size that I can see.

Thanks for your help.

The last I heard, the WiFi update process was broken on Ford's end. It won't currently work.

As to the 32 GB stick, I've seen others post that they got their updates completed on 8GB sticks...as cheap as USB memory sticks are, I'd still use a 32 GB as a minimum.

I used a 4G stick and got it done just fine.

Default Finally Updated

Tried to follow Ford instructions several times...download, unzip, copy to usb, then install in truck. Couple of calls to Sync help line...Nothing lead to an update to 3.0.
Finally tried something I read somewhere in this monster post...Unzip the downloaded file directly to the thumb drive.
Worked like magic and updated in about 30 minutes.
Why?

Smile USB Upgrade to v3.0 from v2.3 Successful

Thought I would share my upgrade experience, as it did not go as described on Ford's instructions.
  1. Unzipped the download file directly to a 64G USB FAT32 drive.
  2. Started my truck as directed in the Ford instructions.
  3. Put in the USB drive. Nothing happened.
  4. Removed the USB drive, took it back to my PC, all looked fine.
  5. Put it back in my truck. Still no indication that anything was happening.
  6. Removed the drive, and this time i got a message something like, "updated failed to load files or something ....."
  7. Put the drive back in, and this time waited a few minuites, and finally got the message "Installing update" or something like it....
  8. I did not stay in the car, but left it locked and running in the driveway. In about 30 min, my truck turned off.
  9. Hit the start button to place it in ACC on mode. The "Installing Update" message was displayed. Engine now not running.
  10. In about 30 more min, got the message "Shutting down to save battery..."
  11. Restated the car, then turned it off, then put it back in ACC mode. Installing Update message re-displayed.
  12. Around the 80 min mark, finally got the "Update complete".
  13. Turned the truck off, and back on, still said V2.3. Then I saw the note in the install directions that the truck needed to be off at least 5 min.
  14. Next time i turned it back on, i got the V3.0 showing up in the "About Sync". Yea, update successful......
  15. Went back to the Ford site to "complete" the update, by uploading the xml file.
  16. I select the file off the USB drive in the SyncMyRide folder, just as requested. I get "Upload unsuccessful. Please again later." Tried a hour later, same error. Will try again tomorrow. I find it interesting that path shows up as "C:\fakepath\Sync_VX(rest of file name).xml" It has the right file name, no idea why the real path is not displayed.
I will update this post if i ever get the xml file to upload.

Still no clue as to why Ford says one needs at least a 32G USB drive. There is no more than 2G's of files on the drive. I wonder if the SW unpacks the tar files onto the USB drive, before installing them?...But flyinghappy said his updated just fine using a 4G USB drive, so that pretty much proves 32G is way overkill.

Have patience after plugging in the USB drive, there is no immediate indication or message that anything is happening..... Give it 2-5 min at least.
And there is no reason to keep the engine running that I can see. It seems to either keep going when the system is off, or it restarts once it's back in ACC mode.

I wouldn't worry about the xml file. If you hit the check for updates over wifi in the settings menu, it will do essentially the same thing. I did my update while I was driving. It will restart the update if you turn off the truck in the middle, but it doesn't keep going with the system off though. Mine was completed in about 20 minutes.

Was 2.2, now 3.0, thanks to ACool and SPART!

I updated with SPARTs files for NAV voice - took about 10 min.
Then I updated with the official Ford 3.0 software downloaded for my VIN. Took maybe 20 minutes.
(I did not do the 3rd step recommended by ACool for gracenotes.)

My update was successful. CarPlay works, Siri works, etc.
Except:
-No gracenotes version
-No confirmation xml file was written to the USB stick. I dont care as long as I get incremental updates over wifi (if/when it is working)

Last week, the leftmost USB port failed. (purchased mail order from a Ford dealer last year). I updated and am now using Carply through the right one.
Wonder when the left one will fail?

I got thinking, is the daughter board that enables navigation in Sync 3 the same PCB that is used in My Ford touch?

I assume it operates independent of the OS but I have never had a Sync 2 APIM apart.

We now know how to add navigation to non navigation Sync 3 assemblies by installing those boards inside the APIM and enabling it with ForScan, but Im not sure what systems are embedded on them and which processes they are responsible for. It seems plausible that if they are just an arbitrary hardware daughterboard that maybe they will work across different operating systems which would significantly decease some of the cost of adding nav.

Default Changes

Is there a list of what changed from Sync 3 version 2.0 to 3.0?
