Default Sudden downshift

Driving in to work this morning, I was on the highway in traffic, coasting at about 40 MPH, when suddenly my truck downshifted all the way to 1st, with a hard jerk. I looked down at the cluster and noticed that 1 was the only gear lit up, like I had locked out gears 2-6. I quickly shifted to neutral, then back into drive and it went back to normal. I didn't even have my hand on the shifter, so don't think I could have somehow bumped the (-) button to lock out the gears, and even if I did, I would have had to bump it 5 times really quick to have it do what it did.

Anyone else ever experience this or have any insight into what may have caused this? I saw a post where someone mentioned a recall on the previous gen trucks for an issue where they would downshift to 1 randomly at any speed, but would think that issue would have been fixed on mine.

Appreciate any insights.

Has this only happened that one time?
It wouldn't hurt to take it to the dealer to check out if there are any TSBs available for your truck.

There's a recall on the 2014's I believe for this (I have 3 friends with 2014's), but I have never heard of a 2015+ doing this.

Only the one time. I checked the TSB thread and don't see anything like this. Only transmission related one I see is for the hard 5-4 downshift. May just drive for a while and see if it happens again. If it does I'll definitely head to the dealer.

Good plan!

I just had this happen to me (while my father-in-law) in my truck. Did the dealership say anything about it? Any other ideas?

I never went to the dealer, as it only happened the one time. However, yesterday morning I found myself driving on the highway again, when I noticed the engine was revved up fairly high. When I looked down, all but 1, 2, and 3 gears were locked out. So I hit the (+) to unlock the other gears and it immediately shifted up to 6. Again, I don't think I bumped the button to lock out the gears, but wasn't actively paying attention to know whether I might have at some point. Now I'm paying close attention all the time to where my right hand is, and what it is doing the whole time I'm driving. If it happens again, I should know for sure if I hit any buttons or not. If it does happen again, think I'll be headed to the dealer to have them take a look.

I hesitate to take it in since it's not something I can show them, and would probably just get the response of not being able to reproduce the issue.

To me and probably to you, it is a major concern on the highway. I had a "hill assist unavailable" before and this seems slightly different. I honestly do not think it was the shifter on my end but who knows for sure. It seems more of an intended process to push the button a couple of times. I agree with you about taking it to the dealership when it is hard to replicate since then it just sits there and we leave with the go ole 'my tech took it for a road test and did not find anything so bring it back later.' My rpms have been staying pretty low lately and apparently when it downshifted, it revved up pretty high too.

Try rolling at idle in first, and tap the handle, and the button without depressing it. Rule out a twitchy button.
