single "clunk" when starting the engine
Been doing reading on other vehicles that have this issue and it seems like it's a pretty popular thing. Especially on Gm vehicles and from what I've read on 90% of vehicles that do this its normal. It's related to the parking pawl on most.
Although this topic:

Says a few posts through on a tsb it's related to cars with the auto start feature and its normal.
I'm curious if it's a GM Trans design thing or if it's normal on start-stop vehicles...

I’ll chime in as yet another victim of this issue. If anything, mine does it more regularly on cold starts. And probably 1 in every 10 starts.
Really would love to see Ford step up. I’ve been a sedan driver dreaming about owning an F-150 for 15 years. Bought my dream truck a month ago: 2018 5.0 Lariat Sport 4x4 SCrew. I hate that my first ever forum post is about a problem. Still thrilled to be in the club!

2018 XLT Sport Package 4x4 3.5L Ecoboost 10 speed. I just bought it from a dealer. It had 4k miles when I bought it. It was apparently a demo (which means the guys at the dealership probably drove it around. It had over 5 phones linked to it already!). I heard it for the first time within a few days of purchasing. At first I thought this was a problem due to every one at the dealership ragging it out, lol. I then found this forum and realized that is not the case.
Same characteristics as every one else. Sometimes no clunk, sometimes small clunk, and then the loud clunk that makes you cringe. Very dissapointed as a first time Ford buyer. I will be taking mine into the dealership to document this case. Not expecting anything to be resolved when I go, but at least it's another documented case.
This is the first forum I have ever joined but felt the need to do so. If you are having this problem and are reading this post, you must take action and start a case file with your dealership. Power in numbers!

My truck started clunking during start up on may 5th 2018 i purchased my truck on may 3rd. Also it will cluck loudly if im coasting in a parking lot or a turn going about 5-10mph then apply the gas and "clunk"! Also i Had in issue in 8th 9th and 10th gear between 1100 rpm and 1500 rpm if I applied to gas without kicking it out of gear the whole truck would bog down and sort of shake really badd and I brought it in for warranty work at about 4500 miles because I was told by the service manager at westher ford in Hamburg New York that give it to the 1st oil change to break in. And the problem didn't go away so I brought it in and he gave me a free oil change and tire rotation and he replicated the shaking but not the Bang upon start up so they re flashed the motor and I guess it had something to do not with the transmission but with the fuel and air mixture or something like that and the problem and 8th 9th and 10th stopped but the banging persisted I was involved in an accident at a car wash where I slightly let off the brake to get my cars truck started for that start stop feature and my truck jump forward with a Bang or clunk upon start up and I tapped the lady in front of me so my insurance company paid out $1600 in damage to the vehicle that I tapped. No reading the forum about the clunk in the dried chef moving I now realize that it wasn't the fault of mine for the accident but the truck jumping forward due to the driveshaft moving during start up and it was in gear so that's why the truck lunged forward On September 6I have an appointment to bring it into the dealership because of the clunking noise and also now I am leaking gear oil out of my rear and where the drive shaft comes in to the rear end There is gear oil all around the pumpkin where the drive shaft enters. So now I have to contact my insurance company and tell them that it wasn't my fault that my truck lunged forward and hit the lady in front of me that it's my truck upon start up the drive shaft engaged and it sent me forward because it was in engine start stop mode or engine shut off mode. I know I tell forward about the accident they're not gonna be happy with me at all and probly show me out of the dealership I need a voice or advice in Hamburg New York thank you for reading
Ok, so for the past 4 days I have been experimenting with my truck. We all know the "Clunk" is so random in every truck. Some do it on cold starts, some don't, some do it after being shut down for 15-20 minutes some don't, but it doesn't "clunk" when auto-start/stop is activated at a stop light or in traffic. So for the past 4 days, I have been turning my ignition off while my truck is in drive, then moving the gear selector to park a few seconds after the engine shuts down. If I am using the parking brake, I will first engage the parking brake while my truck is still in drive, turn off the ignition, then shift to park. In the past 4 days, I have had ZERO CLUNKS, ZERO, not even small ones. I am not saying this will work on everyone's truck, but it has worked on mine. Has anyone tried this?
Well, by applying parking brake while in drive, you leave the transmission loaded, eliminating any driveline lash. So yes, it'd work on ALL trucks. It's also perfectly normal to have some driveline lash, so I'm not remotely worried about it. But I'm surprised Ford didn't install rubber isolators to avoid hearing this perfectly normal phenomenon. If you think your clunk is detrimental to the drivetrain, have you heard how motorcycles sound when you engage 1st gear when stopped? The clunk is brutal by comparison, and yet, nothing ever happens to them. This is one issue I wouldn't waste my time complaining, but to each his own. By the way, my truck started doing it (or at least I became aware of it) last week, with 2,650 miles on the clock. I know it can be avoided if you load the transmission, but that's exactly the opposite of what you should do, so I'll keep engaging parking brake before P, and live with the clunk, which is not out of character on a 4x4 truck IMO
. If my truck develops any real mechanical issue, I won't give Ford a pass, like I'm doing with trivial stuff like this clunk.

I guess you haven't had a major clunk yet. There's no way that is normal. Then why did it just start happening on your truck? If it's normal, shouldnt it have been happening the entire time?

Tried it tonight, and had the worst clunk yet. This is ridiculous.
