Question Key Fob Question

New guy here...just purchased used 2015 F-150 XL. Only came with one key fob (switchblade type) and a valet key. Both will start ant truck. If I purchase a new fob, can I program it those two keys or are two working fobs needed?
Thank much.

Took the to a local lock & key store who cut them for $15.00 each; So for $32.00 each I have spare keys. Loads cheaper than dealer pricing.

Following instructions in the owners manual with the 2 factory key fobs the new keys were matched to my truck and work perfectly.
Strongly suggest doing this before you lose one of the factory keys otherwise you're stuck having to get ripped by the dealer.
I recommend this method for anyone with a '15 or a '16, I did it too because I wanted to have a key I could take to the beach and still unlock and start the truck without issues. Since the transponder is sealed into the key head, this key will never let you down if you don't mind not having the remote functions of the keyfob.

I got the key on eBay for about $40 Canadian, GlenV posted a link with an even better deal, and the cutting by a local locksmith cost $25 Canadian. I programmed the key myself with the two original fobs and the owner's manual. Not all locksmiths can cut these keys, I'm in Kingston and had to go to Ottawa to find one who could.

Dealer wanted well above $100 for a third key and couldn't provide a key only for my vehicle, only a fob as that is what came with it originally.

Edit: alternatively if you want a key that can open the door, but cannot be used to start the truck (hidden key in case you lock yours in), you can get this key cut, but leave it unprogrammed.

That is the route I went. key for $20 on Amazon, dealer cut it for me for $10 and I am safe from locking myself out.
The only thing I don't like about my truck, is the autolock !!!

Amazon Amazon

I have a door keypad, so not an issue for me. But I wanted a way to go to the beach and not have my fob with me, and not leave it in the truck either. So a simple transponder key was the answer, it can get wet and will still work.

OK, I know this is an old thread but is there any reason to think this WON'T work on a 2018 XLT? I'm fine with no remote, I just need a spare key in case I lose one while camping.

My XLT has the "switchblade" flip key and does NOT have the insert in the center console where you put the fob to reprogram it (I looked.) Is it only the keyless trucks that have that little compartment for the key fob?
