Default Rack System

Prepping for next summer, will be pulling a travel trailer and am looking at racks for the truck to throw Kayaks and Canoes on. Anyone have experience with the following racks? I'm mainly interested in how easy to install and remove these systems, plus how much does it break down for storage. I will be putting the rack on only when on trips.

Yakima OverHaul HD System

Thule TracRac TracOne

If you know of another system that is similar, I'm interested in hearing of other brands.

No direct experience, but I have a friend that has a Thule XSporter rack similar to what you posted (those can be raised and lowered). He uses his for hauling kayaks and canoes when they are pulling a travel trailer. He pulls the back one in and out as needed for trips, and leaves the front one in and lowers it down so it has less drag. He seems to be happy with them. If he wasn't he wouldn't keep them in his truck.

I bought a Backrack Headache rack from Amazon. I purchased the open rack design

There is a rear support that can be installed, but doesn't sit level to the front one I don't think.

I read some comments about the aluminum bed stake pockets can be damaged, but mine have never moved.

I installed it to prevent hitting the rear window, when hauling an ATV.

If you're looking at the Thule TracRac, then go to Home Depot and get the exact same one for $300. It's what I use for our two 12' yaks and it's rock-solid. I love it.

Thanks for the responses. The Home Depot one, half the price, thanks for pointing it out.

Just FYI, here are the pads that I use with the TrackRac. I used some duct tape to secure them, otherwise they roll when loading the boats from the ground. For some reason they aren't available on Amazon anymore, but you could possibly go through eTrailer (14" Malone Kayak Blocks) or the manufacturer's website (Malone).

I bought this one from Princess Auto here in Canada but I believe Harbor Freight carries the same one in the US, got mine for $100 CND and it works great. Just search Ladder Racks.

Another option is a hitch loader coupled with a bed rack. I wanted the kayaks on top the bed, but was not pleased with the cost of the heavy duty hitch loaders (regulars ones seemed flimsy), so I built my own for about $120:

I'll have a travel trailer behind me most of he time. So looking to get the kayaks above and over the cab so they don't hang past the tail gate much. Thanks though.

Are your kayak's longer than your trailer is tall? I saw a carrier (custom, I think) on the back of a RV that held 3 or 4 kayaks upright.
