Programming a 3rd Intelligent Access Key
Yes you have to have two fobs to program yourself, but you don't have to use the dealer. Find you a good lock smith company and save yourself alot...
So a couple of questions I need help with, but let me provide a short back story first. I was at lowes with my dad. I remote started the truck as we were walking to the truck so he could have the AC on while I loaded the truck. I guess while I was loading the truck I set the keys on my closed tail gate while I strapped some lumber in. I put the key fob almost on top of the step in the tail gate. (I know I put there because I was able to watch rear facing dash cam footage of the keys on the tailgate - did watch the video till much later). I got home about 4 miles from where the fob fell off the truck. I put it in park then got the no key detected warning. Searched all over the truck, went back to Lowes couldnt find the key. I went home hoping some one would return the key. A couple hours later I realized that I should camera footage, by this time the truck was turned off and I had no way of starting it again (wife is on vacation with my spare had to have her mail it back to me). In the footage I saw where the fob fell off the truck. I got my dad's car and went to the area and found the smashed key fob. When i bought the truck the dealer said the gold key in the fob could start the truck if the fob died. Well...it only unlocks the door that I know of...so...
1. Is there a way to start your truck with the key fob smashed? My sales guy's response was call Ford Roadside assistance and have it towed to Ford for a new key. This happened on a Saturday and the key guy only works M-F.
2. I ordered a couple replacement FOBs, is there a way to program the new FOBs with only one working key fob?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I assume you have the smart key.... if so there is no way to start it with the physical key. Maybe the mangled mess of a FOB will still have a transponder that will work if you set it in the backup location. Worth a try as that’s what you do when a FOB battery dies.
As far as I know you need 2 working FOBs to program any additional FOBs on your own. Otherwise the dealer will need to do it with their extortion fees. I just programmed a Super Duty FOB this past weekend so now I have a 3rd, plus the SD FOB is much better quality in my opinion (or so it seems).
Good luck.

I tried putting the mangled mess into the key fob spot, no luck.
I am glad I was at home and my wife was able to mail back my spare FOB.
I think this is a design problem. What if you are on Vacation over a weekend and the fob gets destroyed and you are stuck till a week day to get a new key and that is assuming the ford dealers around where you are (if any) have keys on hand.
When the sales guy told me the metal key in the fob would start the truck he said there was some spot in the center console or glove box. I couldnt find anything. I asked the sales guy again Monday and he said, no, tow to ford dealer and get key made.
I wish there was some way to hack/install aftermarket item that would allow me to use my truck should that ever happen again.
Thanks for the help though.

The aluminum foil blocks the signal so if someone were to break into your truck, it won't start. If you ever have an emergency, retrieve the hidden key and take it out of the aluminum foil, and you are good to go.

Now THIS I can help you with. Buy and program a spare FOB. Wrap it in 2 or 3 layers of aluminum foil, or remove the battery. Hide it in the truck somewhere.

While this whole process sucks, I am glad it happened while I am at home to deal with it versus happening while on a road trip far away from home.
Earlier today I followed them for my 2017 Lariat and it worked perfectly the first time. I was done in less than a minute.
Be sure to position your key fobs in the slot with their key chain loop up and the buttons facing the truck's rear.
Good luck!
All be damned...Thanks Shovel-ready!! I tried it again and sped up the procedure this time and it worked like a charm.
Here's what I did...
1. I put a small piece of masking tape on the two programmed keys so I knew which keys were which and put all three by the shift lever for easy identification and accessibility.
2. I placed the first programmed key in the backup position
3. With left hand, Press Start\Stop button
4. Counted to three maybe four seconds (one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand)
5. With left hand, pressed Start\Stop button
6. With right hand, swapped first programmed key with second programmed key (quickly)
7. With left hand, pressed Press Start\Stop button
8. Counted the three maybe four seconds (one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand)
9. With right hand, swapped second programmed key with the un-programmed key (quickly)
10. With left hand, pressed Start\Stop button
11. Door locks cycled and dashboard light up and dashboard counsel stated “Key Programming Successful”
I put both factory keys in the house and tested the new key on door locks, tailgate release and remote start and it works just like the factory keys.
I hope the slightly modified procedure will work for others! Thanks again Shovel-ready!
