Default problem updating Sync 3

Sorry if there is a Sticky for this but I didn't see one.

I decided to go ahead and do an update for my Sync 3 since my truck is a 2017 and I keep finding that roads I use are not on the maps. I did the download file update rather than having Ford mail me a USB drive or going to the dealer. Thought it would be easier but so far it hasn't been!

I went to the Ford site and followed all the prompts, entered my VIN and the Sync 3 ESN and eventually got to the part where I paid and downloaded the ZIP file. I picked up a new USB 3.0 128GB drive. It was already formatted to ExFat which is what the instructions tell you to format to. I unzipped the folder as instructed and copied it to my USB drive and then also added the separate license file that came with the download.

I started my truck and inserted the drive and at first it says "Updating Sync Software" but then the screen says, "Installation Error, Not Compatible with Installed Sync Hardware". I tried several times but it was the same result.

I called the Ford help line and explained and the guy said that USB 3 is not compatible with my car! He said only USB 2.0 will work. That seems really odd and I asked if he was sure and he said that he was reading it right out of his manual. Normally USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2 and none of the stuff I read or the YouTube videos I watched said anything like that, most even suggested getting a new 3.0 USB stick with enough capacity. Also, USB 3 was introduced in 2008 so surely a 2017 would use that technology!

Figured I would ask here before I go looking for an old type USB 2 drive.

Currently my truck is on Sync 3 version 2.2 if that is important and I think the upgrade is for 3.2 or 3.3

Your original Sync 3 system will not accept 3.2 or higher software without doing a user modifiable hack:

USB 3 is completely compatible and works fine, that's all I use for my playable media and when I'm upgrading/downgrading or changing different software out on my system. That's not your problem, its your system is not compatible with the 3.2 and higher software directly from the factory.

Wow, I looked at the link you referenced and that doesn't look easy to do and I don't have a Forescan tool or software. Why would Ford sell me an updated version that is beyond what my system can take. They had my VIN and ESN. Seems like they should only let me download a file that will work for my vehicle.

you are talking about two separate things. the file you paid for is a map update and has nothing to do with the software version. pretty sure you need to update your software form 2.2 to 3.0 before applying the map update. you get the software update under support on the ford owners site

You don't need Forscan or a OBD reader/writer to do the system reformatting and upgrading. Just a USB drive, usb 2.0 or 3.0, download the correct files, either nav or non nav, put the files on the usb drive and then into your truck. Takes about 28 minutes for a nav system to upgrade the file system, upgrade the software and install maps.

Your right, he should upgrade his software to the latest version of 3.0 if the maps he was able to download was correct.

If you could share what is in the SyncMyRide folder, that will let us know exactly what you downloaded and what file system, 3.0 or 3.2, the files are set for.

The error is saying Sync hardware. I've only seen that when trying to install 3.2 or higher on an older APIM. I could be completely off base with that assumption and something else is causing it.

Sorry, I didn't realize the map update was a separate thing from the main Sync 3 update. I called back to Ford and got a guy who explained it and helped me download it which is free. I inserted the new download into my truck and went for drive. Figured I would rather drive than just let it sit idling in the car. After 25 minutes or so of freeway rambling it finished so I headed home. Removed the USB drive and shut the car off, restarted it and it says I am now using Sync Version 3.0 instead of 2.2.

I feel fairly tech savvy but it doesn't help that both the map update Zip and the Sync 3 update all look pretty similar as far as the folders.

So now I reformatted the jump drive and am copying the map folder files to it. I will go for another ride this afternoon and hopefully get it all upgraded!

Thanks for the help so far guys.

You will need to first go to owner.ford.com, set up an account if you have not yet, then download the 3.0.19205 update. Install that first. After 3.0.19205 is installed then install your map update. BTW- If you are in Houston (being that your name is Chrisinhouston) then even the latest Ford map updates will be missing roads you are driving on. They cannot keep up with the growth of an area like Houston.

I checked my Sync and it said I have now have Version 3 Build 19205 so I proceeded to start my truck and insert the USB drive with the map updates I paid for earlier. The instructions said it can take an hour or more so I decided to just go drive, with Covid I spend too much time in my house anyway! I drove on our Grand Parkway where you can drive 75 mph and not have much traffic. After about 25 minutes the screen went blank and the radio stopped, after 30 seconds or so the system rebooted but then said it was still installing updates. I decided to turn around and head back, figured maybe in another 30 minutes it might be done. Sure enough after about 40 minutes it stopped updating.

Then I got an error message that said: Installation Failed Error Code PKG-ERR03, Download Files Again and Try to Reinstall or call Customer Service. CRAP. I removed the USB and thought maybe I would try again so I reinserted it and then got a different error message: Installation Failed, Error Code BGMAP_ERR01

So I drove home and when I got there I shut the engine off and restarted it and looked at the SYNC info screen and now it says that I have Navigation Maps Version : NA 1 19. Before I did this last upgrade attempt it said version NA 1 15. So not sure if I have the new upgrade or not. Anyone know what the current one is?
