Default Keyless Smartkey and Backup Hard Key Testing

ok

Just playing around with the truck today. I wanted to test leaving a keyfob in the truck with batteries installed.

First test:

Left extra keyfob in the truck. Locked all doors with a different keyfob and then went into the house and left that keyfob I locked the doors with well away from the truck.

Used my backup hard key to gain access to inside the truck. A warning came up on the dash to start truck or alarm will go off. So I stepped on the brake and started the truck. So it does not care that you locked the doors with another keyfob it will let you start the truck if you hide a keyfob in the truck.

Second Test:

Locked all doors with no keyfob in the truck at all. Had all keyfobs in the house far away from the truck. Used the Hard Key to get in the truck. No Alarm No nothing...

I guess maybe it knows you used the key to gain access to the truck.

Yes I checked my Alarm settings and have it on all sensors active.

So either the truck knows I used my backup key or this keyless system just stinks.

EDIT: I think I am not waiting long enough to get back in the truck. I tried it a second time and the Alarm warning come up and you have so many seconds to start the truck with a working keyfob or the horn sounds. I let it sound this time... Man that horn is loud inside a garage. LOL

I did try a keyfob left in the truck with batteries pulled and no dice will not start, but if you put it in the secret place starts right up...

Adding more to my Tests:

I left the keyfob in the truck with no batteries again. But this time locked the doors with the keypad. Same thing you do have to wait for so long for the truck to arm. I tried getting in to fast and the Alarm Warning did not come up.

Another test waiting longer after locking doors with the keypad and then entering the truck with backup key. Alarm Warning came up. I ran and get a working keyfob and it started.

So this system is smart after all it seems.

Thanks for taking the time to detail of this is, would agree the system is smart after all.

Unrelated, I really like leaving my key in the truck all the time and locking/unlocking with key pad - man that is convenient!

Yes that is convenient, but if they break the glass and get in your truck it's all there's...

And for all of you like me that just have to know how things work. Your keyfob uses two CR2025 batteries and each battery serves a different purpose. One is for the proximity RF signal and the other battery is for all your push button controls in the circuit. I checked with a meter on what was going on there.

Next I will use my Handheld Spectrum Analyzer and try to capture the Freq and power these little things are using. May take some time. I will work on that later.

If they break the glass and open the door without a key, won't the alarm stop them from stealing the vehicle? That's how I thought it worked anyways.

20 seconds till the alarm is activated after arming BTW.

you are correct - if I lock my truck w/keypad and always leave my fob in the hidden compartment you cannot steal the vehicle even if the glass is broken, i.e. it has to be opened by keypad or another fob.

Yea I guess with the sound sensors in there... I am not sure how that would play out. I don't want to break my glass on the truck for Science. LOL

I do know if you hide another keyfob in the truck with batteries in it and you locked the doors with a different keyfob and walk away and then come back to the truck without the keyfob you locked the doors with. You can get in the truck with the backup key and be able to start the truck. I just did that...

That sounds right. Dumb question: where put the actual key to start the vehicle? I don't recall seeing a slot for it.

I believe the valet key is a smart key as well, so it's not just mechanically unlocking things and the truck is aware of it.

I wouldn't believe that it would make any difference which fob you used to lock/unlock/start the truck. I mean, they're all keys to the truck.

So it let you lock your fob inside your truck? I thought it protested or didn't allow that?

I suppose the truck is aware of which fob you are using, because of the ability to do the custom driver settings for each fob, but I'm not sure why anyone would want the truck to only unlock for the same fob that locked it.

This hard key maybe wired to a switch and why I mentioned that in the OP.

So calling i8iridium to pull up some prints and see if there is wires that goto the mechanical key lock in the drivers door. I don't feel like popping the door panel off to see.

If there is then you theory may be correct...

And yes it does not care what keyfob locked the doors and what unlocks them. This is also the case with starting the truck. I know I just tried it.

There is no hard key slot to start the truck. I was referring to using the hard key to get in the truck using the small keyhole in the drivers door. I might have made it sound that way Sorry...
