Default Keep it, or trade it?

Hey all! I bought a 2016 F150 XLT FX4 about a year and a half ago with 20k miles on it. Since buying it I have had:

Door handle recall issue happen twice where I've had to drive 30 min to work holding my door shut
Drove half of the 12 hr drive to Florida and the AC go out, and then the full 12 hr drive back with no AC with 2 5 yr olds.
Windshield wiper/turn signal control arm go out, causing the wipers to stay on, on a dry windshield to and from vacation in FL. (Could have pulled the fuse, but rains so much en route and in Florida that I didn't want to stop and put fuse back in every 10 miles.)
Rear window defroster went out last week, whole rear window replaced.
Rock Chips rusting through the bumper

Yes, they were all under warranty except the bumper, but having something happen during major trips, and all of it before 47k miles seems a bit much. I am used to Volkswagen's, our Ford Flex, Infiniti, Subaru in my past, and this is the only one ever having even 1 major issue prior to 75k miles. With all the insane incentives this month, I am contemplating a trade, but I would lose 3-4k in doing so. If I keep the truck, I am a bit concerned having that many issues, now being out of warranty. Do you guys feel that's justified, or have I been exceptionally lucky on every other vehicle I've owned?

If I trade, it's looking like Dodge or Chevy (anyone have any experience with their 4 cyl 2.7 turbo?). I have not had trucks my whole life like some, but I will never not have a truck again. It just makes everything so much easier for me and my family.

Thanks Ford fam!

Dodge/ jeep/ ram is all Fiat now. They can't write software if you paid them double! Just look at resale and recalls

If you're not happy, trade it and don't look back.

If it were me, I would trade it but all I ever need is a reason to get something new. I was shocked when my wife reminded me that you CAN pay a vehicle off.

I've made the rounds the last few years in terms of manufacturers. I traded my 14 F150 for a 17 GMC with the 6.2. and looking back, I should have kept it. I bought it new for around 42k and it was a solid truck. The 6.2 made great power, made a beautiful noise and was the most fuel efficient gasoline truck that I've owned. I traded that in July for a 19 Ram Laramie Longhorn. I only had a few minor complaints about the Ram but traded it this weekend just shy of 7000 miles. My priorities began to shift a few weeks ago after we had our first child. Suddenly having the nicest vehicle I could no longer appealed to me. Now I'm in a 19 XLT Screw, fx4, sport with the EB.

To date, I've owned 5 Dodges/Rams, 1 GM and 6 various Fords (2 F150s.). That being said, other than a few minor annoyances or issues here and then, I have never had a bad truck from any of the major brands. If you're for a change from Ford, I wouldn't hesitate looking at GM or Ram. I will say that GM seems to get better MPG so if that's a concern, maybe look at them first. I had the 6.2 and 22-24mpg at 70 mph was the norm. A lot of the guys on the GM facebook groups would comment that they could easily hit 25+ mpg with the 5.3 on the highway and I have no reason to doubt that. My biggest complaint about the GM was the fuel tank size.

As for my Ram, that was the nicest truck that I've owned to date. Technology and comfort were on point, the power of the 5.7 was perfectly adequate while towing my boat which weighs around 5k on the trailer. With the 3.92, mileage was nothing to brag about. 15-17 was my norm.

This! For the extra you'd spend to get the 5.3 in a GM I'd totally agree. Aside from the issues of a new engine (2.7) resale value alone would be enough to push me to the V8.

Sure sounds like you’ve had a round of bad luck with this truck. There are thousands of people who have never had an issue with their vehicle. If you’re not happy by all means trade it in, but I do believe in the brand and the trucks . Good luck.

I am one to keep my vehicles for 10 years.

However - in the OP's case I would get rid of the truck and move on. After what has happened I would never trust the truck again - would always be driving down the road waiting for "what's next?".

With that said I would get another Ford. Once in a while there is a problem child out there but that is far from the norm with these trucks.

While none of the issues totally incapacitated us from getting from point a to point b, they sure made me question if I’d get there the whole way. If I was younger, with no twins or wife, I could care less, but...

I love this truck, it’s the perfect color, leveled, hard cover; blah blah, but if it’s questionable, especially without the “lifetime warranty” most dealers offer now, and so many problems pre warranty, my concern about spending thousands out of pocket certainly increases.

I quickly perused the Chevy forums and to be honest, my issues looked minor, their issues seem to stem from “convincing” Chevy to cover them. I will give Ford this, I’ve never been questioned warranty wise, except the bumper which I honestly did t expect them to cover, and always got a loaner, although sometimes it took a week to get one.

What would you guys do? Buy the extended warranty now? Trade it and put the 2500 for warranty and 1k Ish for new tires down on a new one? I used to get new vehicles whenever I wanted, but with kids I have to be a bit more strategic and if I trade it, whatever I get HAS to make it 10 years. With the issues I’ve had, wifey has ruled out anything used, just to be safe. If trading it, it truly seems like another Ford or a Chevy are my best bet?

thanks again all, I know it’s like reading a novel, but appreciate the help and insight!

Yeah you’re in kind of a pickle. I want to keep my truck 10 years as well but I don’t have to to. It’s a more daunting thought when you must do something. I’ll say this, my truck has been a problem child too. Door latches are the only thing that hasn’t affected it. I’ll also say that most of the issues crept up in the first 20-30k miles and have been resolved. I didn’t buy an extended warranty but I asked Ford for one after one of my issues and they gave me a 3 year 36,000 mile extension at around 58,000 miles. It’s not complete bumper to bumper but it’s decent with a $100 deductible. I can live with that. To me, taking the hit on a trade was the worse choice.
