Default GPS / touchscreen issues

I have a 2018 F150 Lariat. Haven’t had any major issues until now! First, pi must say the truck was purchased in Indiana. In October I made a trip to Phoenix. Everything was working fine until we hit the Tucson area. Then the GPS/touchscreen stopped working. I took the vehicle in to the dealer as soon as I arrived at my destination (Casa Grande, AZ) they updated everything they could and took care of all outstanding recalls, but after three days, could not figure out what my issue was. I took the vehicle back to Indiana, it was not reliable for the entire trip home. One I arrived in Indiana. It started working! Needles to say, the dealer couldn’t find any problems! In December we made the same trip, same problem, once we hit Tucson, the touchscreen/gps is sluggish and unreliable. We are still here and still have problems.

has anyone else experienced this issue?

Freezes for a few seconds, then nearly instantaneously catches up? Repeats ad nauseum?
"No GPS" icon on the Nav screen? Track seems to veer way off course, then catch up from time to time?

Bad APIM. Common problem... I lost one in my 16 and one in my 18, both fairly early. The replacement ain't cheap if you're out of warranty.

BTW, the Ford mandated repair is that they must first flash the APIM and reload firmware, then return it to the customer. They did that on my 16, so I picked it up right at closing, of course the problem wasn't solved, and I had to take it back the next day (grumpy as hell). On my 18, I replicated the problem on the drive, tossed the keys back to the service writer, and told them to fix it.

Hi there! Will you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end. Thanks!

Default Thanks!

Thanks for all the input! We are still under warranty but it’s getting close! We’ll take it back in and see what they can do. I was mostly puzzled because of the location thing, not working only in Arizona, working in Indiana. makes it hard to tell a tech what the issue is. Bad thing, if we don’t get it fixed, it affects all the creature comforts. The GPS, radio and heat/AC almost everything goes through that thing! I looked online at Watson Tech. Appears that module is sold out. But after trying the dealer for the warranty fix, if I still need to, I’ll call them anyway. Thanks again!

I have had the same issue with my 2018 f150 I live in Northern Indiana and bought my ford here in Indiana and everything works fine until I try to drive towards Chicago or Northwest and it goes nuts freezing up and just all over the place. touch screen runs slow and not allowing me to use touch screen. I have had it back to the dealer several times. All I get is yea let's do an update. this does nothing. They have also stated other ford vehicles of this year has the same issue. They even stated they have actually replaced everything one on particular car and it did not fix the issue. Now my Bluetooth is not allowing me to answer calls, so I have to call them back or it disconnects from my phone altogether. Getting frustrated and no help from ford. As much as these trucks cost one would think they could or would fix the issue.

The Ford techs at the dealer have limited options for diagnosing the system. They can make sure the software is up to date, and replace the module. What else do you expect them to do?

Some people have had luck with following this procedure: https://www.f150forum.com/f118/upgra...ctions-458828/
Even though it's mentioned about 10 times in that thread, note that following that guide will void any warranty you might have with Ford, and the dealer won't support it after you do it.

Also covered in several other threads on this forum, the symptoms you are describing also can be a sign of a failing module, called the APIM. You can get a replacement APIM from several online vendors, and even some forum members here on this forum.

The same could be said about many things in life that cost money. Sadly, that's not how life works.

I have the same issue with my infotainment system too. It is a bad APIM. My dealer told me to disconnect the negative battery terminal, and push the brake pedal 3 times and hold each time for 5 seconds.....

Default Solved!

After going to 3 different dealerships, we found one that agreed to replace the APIM. They also honored the extended warranty, although we did have to pay a deductible of $100. Everything works now as it should!

Thank you for the quick reply, My Vin number is 1FTFW1E51JKDO1448 and I purchased my 2018 F150 from Oliver Ford Sales,Inc. brand new and I've had this issue from day one of purchasing. My name is William Gaines looking forward to something, anything.I am retired disabled veteran and I travel to Loyola hospital in Chicago once a month and its sad but I have to rely on Google maps on my phone because my$1,039.00 a month truck payment is unreliable. I love my Ford trucks and I love my truck but I'm growing discouraged with the response I've had with this issue. By no means am I disgruntled towards Oliver Ford Inc. Or the product just disappointed.
Thank you Sincerely
William Gaines
