Glad to see Google and Ford teaming up on a self driving car. Wish Ford would let Google design a navigation/entertainment system!

Here's hoping that Ford will come to their senses and incorporate Android auto into Sync 3.

Here's hoping sooner rather than later ALL manufacturers remove themselves as barriers to technology and allow owners to insert their own iPad (or tablet-of-choice) into an empty space on the center dash.

WHEN this happens (not if) Ford will get revenue by selling apps to control the seats, A/C, radio etc. By selling at a few $ per app they will probably end up with higher revenues overall, and owners will have a much better technology experience.

I do not believe that it will happen. Too many different tablets out there that have too many different sizes and they would have to find a way to prevent certain screen operations while the vehicle is in motion which would require software that they could not be certain everyone would install.

If anything, I could maybe see a custom iPad or Android tablet as a factory screen option but it would have to have certain software modifications as part of the base OS and while they certainly could work with someone to do so on the Android side, I highly doubt that Apple would allow them to customize the OS to add restrictions that would have to be in place.

Manufacturers will support whichever tablets give them greater market opportunities So it will likely be only iOS and Android, eventually dwindling to iOS unless something else comes along.

Different size/shape devices are installed using different bezels. Ford will sell them for $2-300 each, but after-market will be available.

Tablet will go into 'car mode' when connected to vehicle to disable extraneous, non-essential apps.

This is the future.

OK, So how is the tablet that I own going to go into 'car mode'? Without an customized OS, it isn't. So unless Apple allows a customized iOS for vehicle manufacturers to use, it just is not happening...and if it does, the tablet will have to be sourced from the vehicle manufacturer.

As for 'dwindling to iOS', not likely. Android is still the top platform in the US market.

The tablet will know it's connected to a vehicle as soon a the USB connection is made. At that point it will drop into vehicle mode (CarPlay on iOS).

Apple already has a customized OS for vehicles, based on iOS. It's called CarPlay http://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/

Well. that depends how you define 'top platform'.

Android has more users. But Android users don't spend much on apps.

Developers make a LOT more $$$'s from Apple.

If you are a developer you are going to make your app for iOS first, and then maybe for Android, and finally for Windows mobile etc.

In the longterm, developers will gravitate to the platform that nets them the most profit. A stable mobile OS platform with a strong ecosystem of developers (and apps) is likely to prevail over all others.
