Lightbulb The end of Halogen?

Could this be the end? Maybe GM saw some foreshadowing with HID/LED in the truck line, or just tried to stay afloat on the feature end. It looks like they just tested midsize in their initial tests, but it should trickle down to other models, right? I would welcome this in all vehicles going forward. Who knows? Thoughts?

In my opinion within a few years everything will be LED. Look at the trend in homes, a lot of LED lights are being used now adays in homes. With technology changing everyday you can get LED in many color temperatures (great for homes).

From 3000k for fogs up to 6500k for headlights...

Unlike HID, which was a great product when it came out, LED are cheaper to run, cooler to run, last longer BUT more expensive. But LED's are coming down in price every year.

I believe within 1-2 years every manufacturer will have LED as an upgrade option. Within 5-7 years it will be standard on all vehicles.

Even tho 4x4 is a LED vendor and surely biased toward LED's, I would have to say he is probably pretty darn accurate on his assessment.

Heck, half my Christmas lights last year were LED's, in a couple more year as I add more or replace old ones, they will all be LED.

The only ones that probably won't care too much for LED headlights will be the northern boys, since they won't heat up and melt the ice off.

F150 didn't make the list because the guy driving it crashed and died and never turned in his report

Seriously, when it's raining and light isn't great its dangerous,

Like all things, there will be trickle down but by the time it makes it down laser lights will be all the rage!

I see some higher end LEDs on vehicles and they are marginally better or the same as HIDs. My retrofit HIDs blow away stock LEDs.

LEDs are great when they are well made.

I converted all of mine three years ago with good quality GE LEDs. Maybe 1/3 of the couple hundred feet are usable at this point, and that's with a lot of repair work. I also have a full set that I switch out the incandescent for when we take the RV boondocking, but they don't last too long either. Even the various ones we've used around the house seem to have a relatively high failure rate, especially given the tremendous cost difference.

Just like when HID first came on the market, there were GOOD products and BAD products. The market became so flooded with BAD products everybody had a bad taste.

Same with LED. There are so many cheap products that don't function and it puts a bad taste in peoples mouths.

I believe LED are better, having come from the HID industry back when it became mainstream. They are more durable and last longer and you can put more light output from an LED chip than you can from HID bulbs.

Technically to get the output of an LED closer to the output of HIDs there has to be massive cooling for the LEDs!

Like I said, side by side my retrofit HIDs outperform OEM LEDs. This is a non scientific test, just lining up side by side with an F150 with LEDs. It's not conclusive as the housing is smaller and the projector for the LEDs is smaller than my projector HIDs.

I have factory hid's on my '14 xlt. Kind of a rare option for an xlt. Would it be a good idea to change to led's?
