Thanks SOOO MUUUCHH jm061 and others who helped; this update to my 2016 Screw XLT is so cool, and even better, extremely useful!
The module was easy to install (I used an HC3Z-19A387-B, blue lit from Walt Sweeney Ford, total with shipping was $61.64), and I just followed the README.txt instructions, and voila; Apple CarPlay working quite well!
I had CarPlay in a Pioneer deck in an older pickup, and really found it useful.
The integration with Ford Sync seems to be pretty much flawless (so far).
Got my 2016 XLT about a month ago and with the help of this forum upgraded the SYNC and procured the USB dual port part from the dealership to get Apple CarPlay working. Here are a few things I discovered that might be useful for you all.
Sync Upgrade
1. I first tried to use a 16gb usb drive as the upgrade drive for SYNC and for whatever reason during the install process SYNC would stop and give me some message about running out of space. Had to get a smaller 8gb drive for it to finally work.
2. Going from the Sync 3.0 to 3.1 wasn't super clear when i was reading through all the forums so just know if you try to make the leap from 3.0 to 3.2 without that stop over at 3.1 it won't work.
3. Didn't realize at first that upgrading to 3.2 didn't give me CarPlay just made sync a little nicer.
4. If you are in the process of buying the truck or just bought it even the sales guy may not have any clue about upgrading your SYNC version or the usb hub mine asked me to brief him so he could tell other customers.
USB Port Upgrade
1. The part number for the dual port hub that worked for me was HC3Z-19A387-B
2. The dealership parts guy may not have any idea what your talking about just tell him to plug the number in and order it.
3. The hub most likely will be coming straight from the factory and not a distribution center as a more knowledgable parts guy told me so getting an ETA is worthless. In my experience they told me 4-6 weeks and it showed up in 2.
4. Some YouTube tutorials on replacing the hub have you prying around on the old hub and not removing the rest of the radio console. I didn't want to scratch the crap outta the surrounding plastic so i opted to just remove the few screws holding the radio bezels on and get better access to removing the usb hub. There are two little wings on the side of the USB hub that you need to push in so you can get it to come out easily. I just got one wing depressed and hub started to come out then i pulled a bit and the other wing let go.
When your iPhone is plugged in and CarPlay is activated and you touch the SYNC button to go back to the normal display is there supposed to be a Map on that screen? I only have a directional arrow in place of the map. I have the normal box that shows what's playing on the radio and I have under that the icons for heated cooled seats and steering wheel but the map box only shows the directional arrow.
