I simply can't go through all the posts for the answer. The original post hasn't been updated with the answer....
I've got a 2016 sync 3 V1.0. The truck is at the dealership now for some work. I asked about the sync 3 2.0. update for my truck and the service desk had no clue what I was talking about.
What do I need to ask them for to get Android Auto to work?
Thanks everyone!
most dealers have no idea. So I had to do it myself. Thank goodness for this forum. Bc it is more helpful.

I have a 16 XLT Sport FX4 with a build date of 11/15. When I purchased the truck back in 3/16 I wasn't even told about Apple CarPlay so it wasn't a feature I considered. It wasn't until a friend of mine bought a 2017 Explorer a month or so ago when I noticed his Sync3 display looked different. I started researching and ended up at this thread.
Intrigued, I followed the posts from Jm061 and downloaded the v1 to v2.2 update. Plugged in my 8gb thumb drive and received this screen:
This took appx. 15 minutes and once it said it was finished I removed the drive and restarted the truck. I ended up with this screen when I checked:
Once I was satisfied I ordered the new USB hub from Walt Sweeney. I ordered it last Friday and with the holiday I received it yesterday. I ordered the version with the white LED. GJ7Z-19A387-B.
I didn't get a picture of the numbers on the new port however. I popped the factory plug out and plugged in the new port. Before I snapped it back into its spot I turned my truck on, plugged in the lightning cable to the port and then to my phone and tada here's my screen now:
To be honest it's a nice integration to Apple but I'm so used to using Sync3 to control everything it may take some getting used to. Most of my music is played off of thumb drives so CarPlay isn't helping me there. I'll probably like it more once I'll need to use Google maps. Even with factory navigation I always tended to use Google Maps over Bluetooth because the directions were usually better.
Also, I'll update back once I see how Pandora and Spotify work through CarPlay as with Mobile Apps in Sync3 they would just shut off randomly.
I'll make sure to check everything out thoroughly before I make a definitive decision whether or not spending 60 bucks for the upgraded hub and loading the software upgrade was worth it.
In the meantime thanks everyone for posting to this thread. It's been informative.

I realized I said Google after I re-read my post. Habit I guess calling it Google maps since I've had iPhones prior to them defaulting their map service to Apple Maps.
Hey, nice pics. I have a quick question for you. On the pic you have about the Sync info, after updating, where it displays the version you have. What's your Navigation Version? NA 1 14 or 1 15 or something else?
Just curious, I know this is probably for a different thread, but just wondering what version you have, cause from what I understand, even the newest Nav version is at least 2 years old, or like mine 3, that's on a truck I bought 2 months ago.
As a pointless side note, I think it's funny that everyone is so careful about not revealing their VINs or license plate numbers, when anyone can walk up to your truck and just look at them both.
Has anyone seen the message "The Inserted USB device is not responding"
I installed the GJ7Z-19A387-B USB Hub
I upgraded to 2.2 through this hub without any issues.
I had to turn off the truck and wait to get the NAV to start working..
But now it wont recognize my phone, not as an audio source or as a CarPlay device.
I tried both Apple Iphone 7 and Iphone 6S
It does charge the iphone when plugged in and YES i am using an apple cable,,

What if someone steals your trucks ID and takes out a loan under your trucks name.
