Column Shift or Console Shift
I ordered my XLT with the bench and column shift. What I really like is that there is a compartment under the seat squab and another in the seat-back, accessible when folded down. Doubled my junk capacity right there.
Haha! Unless you have this particular model configuration or know someone who does, I don't think most people would even realize that the under-seat compartment exists. I always leave the seat back up, and have the cupholders that attach to the cubby and sit on the transmission tunnel in place. Now you don't even notice the handle.
Am I the only one that had to Google seat squab. The only squab I have a memory of in my 74 years is a baby pigeon. Or is seat squab a Canadian thing? Curious minds, well, they're curious.
Actually, I believe the origin is British. In my younger days (I'm in my mid-fifties now) several of my buddies were running (and still do) a garage/restoration center specializing in British cars. I picked up that, and many other weird, wonderful and often confusing expressions as well.
I used to cringe at column shifters. Yuck. Geezer shifters were not for me. That is until I drove an F150 with a column shift and bucket seats, which provide the huge storage cubby. One of my favorite features! Couldn’t live without it.
Yesterday I made use of that space using a Dremel tool to grind a hole under there and another in the front cubby with sliding cover so I could route a USB cable from the data/charging ports out the bottom of the front cubby, into & up from the rear lower cubby area, and just put the rubber tray back in. Now I can leave that front cubby normally covered. And I can always stuff the USB cable under the plastic tray.
I saw where a few had removed the console top to route a USB cable but I thought thee had to be an easier way. Yes, there was, THANKS to the column shifter.
My other thought was to have the cable come up under the console middle thin (pen/pencil?) slot but had wiring to avoid.
