Default 2017 Windshield Replacement Help

2017 Platinum. Does anyone know if the windshield itself contains any sensors that need to be accounted for during a windshield replacement? I know there’s rain sensors somewhere for the wipers but I’m not sure where. Second, does anyone have prices based on prior windshield replacements? Just trying to get an idea. Thanks!

Your insurance doesn't cover windshield replacements?

They do, just trying to decide whether or not to go to the dealership. I have a deductible so if somewhere else will do it for cheaper than the deductible without having to worry about anything fancy (like sensors or whatever) then I might do it there.

You don't have a professional auto glass shop near you? Do a little research and find out. Your windshield needs a professional and an OEM windshield, not someone that rolls out to your home to install it. There is a good chance your dealership would send it to a specialty shop anyhow.

The sensor for the wipers is above your rearview mirror, next to the camera. Any glass shop should be able to provide the correct windshield for you, these sensors aren't new. I had a Grand Cherokee 20 years ago with a wiper sensor and didn't have any problems getting that windshield replaced.

Your windshield needs to be the proper type for the rain sensor and IPMA. It does not need to be a OEM windshield, just a good aftermarket one will work. I'm on my 5th windshield. All have been aftermarket. Each time the sensors have been moved over with the new windshield. The rain sensor requires no calibration. The IPMA requires recalibration. Camera alignment is required for the lane keeping alert and lane keeping aid to function correctly. The procedure is initiated using the diagnostic scan tool and requires about 10 minutes of driving above 40 mph (64 km/h) to complete. My rain sensor, lane keeping assist, and auto high beam all work the way they did when the truck was new. I will say, the auto wipers and high beams work exceptionally well. The LKA, on the other hand, is something I hate and very rarely use it and it was been that way since new.

For OEM spec glass without Ford logo expect to pay about $500 without calibration which you can do yourself with Forscan. If you need the Ford logo on the glass add $200. Here are some options that have online scheduling.
  • Glass America
  • Safelite - My local Safelite shop will not replace windshields for lifted or leveled trucks

If you go to Safelite, ask to see the glass being installed first! Inspite of the fact that I called and requested the original Soundscreen windshield, they tried to install something else once I got there.

Is the Gorilla glass windshield any better? I have a small chip in mine that I suspect will start to "travel" as soon as I hit a big bump.
