Default why so noisy

i have owned 3 fords. A '86 mustang, '90 f150 300-6, and my current '96 f150 302. every one of them had powersteering noise. they worked fine, then why are they so noisy and is there a fix for it. it sounds like its supercharged but not as fast.

i heard lucas power steering fluid would help if you drain the whole system and put lucas in. my 90 is also noisy and i have not yet tried this, but i heard it helps.

Yes, it's a Ford thing...
But we are Ford owners and we have a fix for everything.
The vans, from the same time period, used a different pump. This pump with it's bracket can be swapped into our trucks with minimal effort. The results....well...much quieter.
Do a search on for "Saginaw power steering pump swap" or something like that and you'll find lots.

Hope this helps

I was wondering why the van I got my motor from had a GM power steering pump on it.

My Alldata info say's many times it's air in the system. The cure is to put the front end up on blocks, tires off the ground & w/ the engine at idle, very slowly turn the wheel back and forth, changing directions a few inches prior to hitting the stops. This method worked on my truck & my G/F's ford escort. I also flushed the power steering system, replacing the existing fluid first. It breaks down physically by exposure to temp variations, pressurization & contamination. It darkens & takes on a burnt, acrid odor, similar to tranny fliud that's pooched.

I heard to do it from stop to stop, just bumping the stop but not holding against them.

Wouldn't just driving the vehicle do the same thing? I turn my wheels in both directions everytime I drive! But, my steering pump is still noisy?!?!

I've also been told it's a side effect of the pump type....

(I have to, to get out of my developement!)
