Default Trans help needed.

A young guy at work just got a 94 5.8 e4od 4x4 from his grand father that just passed and he asked me to look at it this weekend.

The problem as he described it is : it hadn't ran in 6 months and when he fired it up it stalls when putting it into gear and then when driving the Trans will only shift from 1st to 2nd.

I'm thinking a sensor, I want to be as prepared as possible to help this kid out as he has a lot of sentimental value in this pickup and doesn't have much cash. So I thought I would see what you guys think!

Yep that's what I was thinking! I told him that and he looked at me like I was speaking Chinese so I said I'd take a look on Saturday.

Ok so I finally got over and checked this kids pickup out.
There's a few more problems then he described...
First off the truck will not start unless you put the gas pedal to the floor and then it starts to fire. After some cranking it will slowly pickup if you hold it to the floor like an old carb v8 when flooded.

Then it will idle put wants to stall as soon as you touch the gas or put it in gear.
I didn't have time to tear into it because of terrible weather, but hope to get back there to help him ASAP. Any input you guys have would be much appreciated!

The injectors are not turning off. You still need to pull codes.

X2 on most FI systems when you crank the engine at wot the fuel pump will shut off. If its starting this way there is an issue with fuel control.

Dude, step one is always pull codes. If you don't you're just wasting time.
