Default steering problems

hey fellas just joined and have been offerin a little advice to people, but i have a question. i have a 1991 f150 4x4 nite edition, its got the 302 with a 5-speed. recently it has been stalling when making a turn. it only does this until it warms up. i think it has something to do with the steering because A) i'm steering it, and B) i set it outback of my garage and turned the wheel a couple times and it falls on its face and stalls. this truck is my daily driver and i dont want to crash her. any advice would greatly appreciated.

There should be a sensor telling the computor that you are in a steering mode. If this is at fault the EEC IV system should give you a code accordingly. Have the codes read. If all clear, how tight does the steering feel? Jack up truck and turn the wheels left and right. Get back to us.

Also it could be the power steering pump working to hard or going bad. Check the fluid. If the P/S pump is working hard or going bad then it will put that strain on the motor causing the stall.....just a thought

Ditto on the PS pump. You can also check the gear box to make sure that it's not excessively loose. The steering gear box is a worm gear with bearings and a heavy gear that does all the work. If it's failing, it could be jamming up with low pressure and stalling the engine.

Here's a decent pic of how the gear box works. Lots of room for things to go wrong. If you have excessive play, these are also a good cause of it.

Glad you got it figured out. For some reason, I always go right to the worst case scenario right away, and overlook the simple fix.

Usually I forget to check the nut behind the steering wheel

Backing the screw will loosen the steering.
