Are there 2 wires 1 lg and 1 sm or just one lg wire going to the starter? Might have the wires crossed, or check the little wire with the boot that goes on the solenoid and check to see its making contact.

Cool what was it? I was going to suggest the rapping it with a hammer trick. Sounded like the solenoid on the starter.

Default Starter Problem. I had the same problem

Easy Fix. If it humms. The battery is good and the starter is new. Its the the battery cables. The red +positive one that goes to the solonoid from the battery.. Replace it $5.99 at O'reilly Auto Parts. The -negative ground battery cable that goes to the starter. Snip off the end connector that goes to the battery and put a new battery terminal on it $2.99 My truck starts right up. No more humming sound. The only other thing that it could be woud be the key and ignition in the steering wheel itself. But i doubt it. My 1987 5.0 F150 was doing the same thing 3 days ago. Starts right up now.
