Ive changed the sensor on the rear end, that helped none.. The computer at advanced auto shows a transmission speed sensor (different part than the rear end sensor, and is not the mechanical gear). I cant find this sensor for anything.. Ive followed wires and all..
Where is the trans speed sensor located? and if you dont think I have one, What else could be making my speedo jump around and making my transmission shift bad?

Well, let's see if anyone can reply to a 5 year old thread. With a new computer, my '96 F-150 4x4 5.0 with E4OD tranny is throwing P0720 codes and shifting crazy - never did that before the new computer. Shifts from 1st to 4th OD! at 10mph!

IT HAS TO HAVE AN OSS TO KNOW WHEN TO SHIFT GEARS. The computer is saying there is a fault in the OSS circuit.

But alas, like Fishon91, I cannot find it for nothing - lots of pics on the web of the tranny WITHOUT the transfer case showing it on the top aft part of tranny, but no pics with the transfer case.

Anyone out there who can help?

Gatornapper, I have an 89 F150 4x4 Manual Trans truck and the output speed sensor is tied to the mechanical speedometer gear assembly. It is located on the back of the transfer case. On the drivers side, just before the output shaft. My speed sensor connector is busted on the male and the female side so I'm going to replace both. Most likely your auto trans couldn't tell what speed the truck was going, causing it to shift erratically.

I have a 1990 F150 4x4 with a 4.9L and manual tranny. Would you happen to have a photo of the location of the sensor?

Thanks...

Just follow the speedometer cable to where it goes into the transfer case, but your truck will only have that speed sensor if you have cruise control, and operating the cruise control is its one and only function. You will also have a speed sensor on the rear end, but in your truck, that sensor's sole function is for rabs.

My 1994 E4OD van has a VSS in the output shaft housing / tail housing
When mine acts up, it causes erratic speedo and cruise control, but no shifting issues
It's one of the electronic ones with no speedo cable, just wires

I had to replace my output shaft housing because the original was cracked. Here's a photo of the speedo hole in the housing where the sensor goes.

Speedo Sensor Hole in transfer case output shaft housing

Here's a photo of the output housing of the transfer case. Just follow the rear driveshaft back to this location and you'll see the speedo hole. Follow the mechanical speedo cable to the sensor. See the sensor in this photo sticking out of the left hand side. The speedo cable connects into it and there is also an electrical socket which a harness plugs into for the rear ABS.

My '89 only has the one sensor tied in with the mechanical speedo cable. This is for the RABS. I've seen the sensors in the rear end but I think Ford didn't introduce them until later on, maybe 1992? So his '90 might only have the one sensor also.
