Do I need special tools to change the water pump on a 91 ford f150 300 inline 6? Am I able to do it using regular tools?

 

I have never done an I6 but have done several other makes/models. I would say with a good set of hand tools you can change it just fine. Little tip.... If the water pump is failed the hoses are probably old. Save yourself the time trying to remove the hoses and just cut them off. Cheap investment to install new hoses.

 

Need fan clutch removal tool about 15. Its a thin wrench about 30 mm plus or minus. If its been on a while remove clutch with pump and seperate away from engine.

 

86-91 4.9L uses 30mm pilot with a 36mm hex nut that has reverse threads, 92-97 4.9L uses 33mm pilot with a 40mm hex nut with reverse threads aswell. You MUST use the right water pump and fan clutch for the year model engine. They won't interchange. On my 95 4.9L I have to use the large fan clutch and the 40mm tool is too small. I've found this is quite common, a couple passes along each inside edge on the wrench with a grinder makes it useable.

 

They are not reverse threads, they are standard.

 

The fan clutch mounts to the water pump pilot and YES they are reverse thread. Look at and old water pump or fan clutch and you'll see. The v8s fan clutch mounts to the water pump boss with 4 bolts. All L6 use a pilot nut fan clutch that has reverse threads on the water pump pilot.

 

I am just doing mine right now (94 4.9L) and its a standard right hand thread. it even says so on the radiator shroud. Also Autozone or the like will rent you the tools.

 

One time, I changed a water pump on my old I6 on the side of the road where it finally gave out. (Shoutout to the Vestaburg, MI NAPA!) Got the job done without the fan clutch removal tool.

V-belt systems use left hand thread, not serpentine.

Certain years (like my '87) you don't need the fan clutch removal tool.
