Default Smoking

Hello everyone. This is my first post here so go easy on me.

I have a 1994 F150 that has started smoking. It is the 4.9 engine with automatic transmission. It is intermittent and sometimes goes away for a few days. The last time it smoked, I was traveling on the highway when I noticed it. When I got home, I checked all the fluids and the transmission fluid was about a 1/2 quart low. I suspect a bad modulator valve. I remember this problem from my wife's old Pontiac from years ago. I tried to look for that valve on my truck but can't find it. Can someone point me to where it is? The Haynes manual I have says it's on the right side of the transmission, but i don't see anything that looks like that. Could it be in-line or under the hood somewhere?

Any leads would be appreciated!

Blue, black or white smoke?

I don't get stuck. I just lose traction and stop moving!

It's not black. To me it's greyish white. It does not smell like oil. I just suspect the tranny as the fluid was low once after a LOT of smoke.

'94 doesn't have a modulator.

I guess that's why I can't find it!

It doesn't have one unless you have a C6 transmission in it.

I have no clue as to what transmission I have. It does have overdrive if that makes a difference.

If I don't have a modulator, does anyone have any other ideas of what would cause intermittent smoking?

Valve seals can do it too. But with it being a whiteish color I'm agreeing along a head gasket, intake gasket area. Have you been having to add coolant?
