Hello all,
New here and looking for some advice.
Just got my new tach installed
Wondering what the ideal shift point is for a 300 six..
I think I have been lugging her for awhile but who knows..
Any help appreciated!

the higher the rpm you shift at the more gas you use...the lower the better for MPG but it's all up to you in the end...I shift at 1500-1800 myself

Agreed. I don't wind mine up much at all. Usually about 1500 to 1600 is my normal shift point.

Holy crap! Mine likes to be between 2000 and 3500 RPMs. I like it at 2000 RPMs cruising.

It depends on what gear you cruise in. I don't get to use 5th too often. There's just no power under 2000. I do always pull my trailer, but I drive the same without it. It's just faster without it.

That's a 6x10 box trailer loaded with tools, it's like pulling a parachute. But like I said, I drive the same without it. I should have never tried the 3.08s, I'll be much better off when I put the 3.55s back in. It was worth it for the experiment though.

I've always suspected my particular L6 was underpowered compared to others of same engine. I don't really care as it gets the job done but it never does it exactly speedily or anywhere near that!

I don't see why everyone says that, mine has plenty of power for everything I use it for. And usually that includes pulling the trailer with the bed loaded down with materials. You guys need to drive in the power band, of course the truck is a slug if you're shifting under 2000. I've tached mine up to 4500 and that's not even close to red line, although I don't like taking it THAT high.

Mine pleasantly surprises me. Once I step on it and it gets into that powerband, she flies pretty well. I wish I knew RPMs, but the tach is broke... Sean, where'd you get that bull bar from? I've been looking for one like that but haven't been sucessful in finding one

My truck has 3.55 gears, and a 5 speed manual tranny... 1st gear i run up to 10-15 mph... 2nd: 20-25mph.... 3rd 35mph.. and 4th 55mph.... i got pissed one day and ran 3rd gear all the way up to 50-55mph and it didn't blow up lol so i guess it's still a pretty strong motor... thats the only time i've done that before though... untill i get off my lazy *** and install my aftermarket tach, i promised my truck that i wouldn't get pissed at her anymore and try to blow it up haha
