Default Overheating and idle problems

Hey everyone, I just bought an 89 with the 302 EFI, 5 speed manual, I have issues with overheating but I put a new water pump, and thermostat in it, also it idles at 2 grand sometimes and other times it will bounce from 500 to 1000 rpm's could the idling just be that the IAC needs to be cleaned? And as for the overheating do I just need to get a new radiator too?

Try flushing out the system and refill before you start investing in parts. Get one of those flush kits that get installed in the heater hose and run water through for a good while. Also take note on when it overheats. If it does it when your stopped or in heavy traffic, it could be the fan clutch. If there is a radiator problem, flushing should help.

Have you checked for codes? Not to beat a dead horse, but you've got problems, primarily the idle issue, that should give you some kind of code. Check the sticky at the top of the forum about checking codes. This is a must!!!!!!

^^^x2^^^

IAC probably needs cleaned

x2 on fan, I would replace with e-fan

x2 on flush kit, also get some chemical flush and run it a day or two before flushing, follow the directions.

I replaced the fan clutch when I replaced the water pump, forgot to mention that, thanks for the answers, I will see if flushing it takes care of the overheating.

Just use paperclip or short piece of wire.

I may sound stupid for asking but is there a diagnostic plug in on an 89?
