Default Just get a code reader

This is geared towards less experienced people like my self and others. These things are super cheap and there is no miss under standing what codes are being pulled. I have never even tried using a clip and it sounds like it is easy but with the reader you plug it in and push the button. It also comes with a book and tells you what the code is. If you don`t miss place it, it will last a life time.

Which unit did you get?
I did a writeup on how to do the self diagnostics / code reading using the jumper method and using a code reader (EQUUS 3145). You can download the manual in PDF from the manufacture. Link in my web page below.

Yeah, but the book for your specific vehicle better defines certain codes.

My bothers had Innova 3145 that they no longer needed. I`ll learn the paper clip just in case I break down on the highway and don`t have my reader with me.

Thats good to know you can pull codes before 1988. I`ll use the search button and read up on that. I don`t think I`ll ever work on any that old but it is good to know.
