Unhappy engine overheating

it over heats randomly, then when i start giving it some gas it cools back down. then i take my foot off the gas to stop at a light, and it starts over heating again...

its an 96 f150 ext cab 351 flarside.

what could be the problem?

Before thinking thermostat, check carefully for leaks & burp the radiator to evacuate any air in the coolant system.

If it only overheats during stops and slow movement then your fan clutch has gone the way of the Dodo.

Sorry ma'am, we wouldn't want you to break a nail. I don't think the muffler is the problem honey.

I always remember an important thing about overheating - is caused by one of two problems - coolant flow or air flow - everything else is just details...

I'd go with the fan clutch too. I have a similar problem in my girlfriends blazer
