Default eec swap??

Hi I’ve been trying to fix my truck it keeps stalling / running rough / black smoke you name it.
I’ve posted details in an older post and have gotten lots of help and ideas.
I’ve tried reading codes, checking timing, changing sensors, new plugs and distributor cap and so on. I will think I found the problem and the truck will work good then out of the blue I get the same or new problems show up and im back where I started.
I’ve been doing a lot of reading and some people with the same truck and similar problems have had good results changing the pcm / eec / ecm (think there the same thing).
Anyway my truck is a 1990 inline six 5 speed.
I have another truck a days drive away and im going to get it tomorrow
Its either 88 or 89 with the same engine and trans.
Can I swap the eec into my 1990 or will I mess things up?
Thanks for any advice.

According to my wiring diagrams all three of those years are different.

If it were me I'd probably try it anyways.

Hey Sean if I use the other pcm do you think it would fry it?
There only $40.00 at the wrecker and I know they have 90s, just tired of buying parts lol.

At a quick glance (I don't feel like going through three wiring diagrams) the oxygen sensor is wired differently for the '88-'89.

That could be fixed by moving the pin-outs......got a link to your original thread?

Default Picture of EEC from under hood.

Black smoke (Unburned hydrocarbons) usually means too much fuel.

According to Haynes Manual # 36058.
The 1987-89 F-150 wiring diagram is the same.
The 1990-91 F-150 wiring diagram is the same.
The 1992-96 F-150 wiring diagram is the same.

You may already know this;
Remove the driver's side kick panel to remove and replace the EEC.

Unbolt harness from under hood first. (See pic)

The rubber seal at the firewall is difficult to re-install correctly,
or it was for me.

Hope this helps!

Ok, just read the whole other thread. I'm under the assumption that the new TFI module fixed your issues...is this incorrect? Did you get the fuel pump issue taken care of?

Hey everyone. I was sure the tfi had fixed the problem the yesterday I got the exact same problem again. Its purely an intermittent problem, my guess is the eec Is going wonky as
I have problems that seem unrelated to one particular sensor.
also when the truck runs rough and I get the black smoke all I have to do is turn off the key turn it back on and the truck runs good same with the fuel pump.
it almost feels like im rebooting a computer. That’s what im going on now anyway.

I just looked at my manuals wiring diagrams (never thought of that in the first place)
Im going to buy a used eec from the wrecker.
Thanks.
